Thread: Broadband, Firewalls & Frame rates

Default Broadband, Firewalls & Frame rates

As seems to be the norm I close down all programmes when using FS to maximize frame rates. This includes virus scan and firewalls. This of course leaves Broadband on line with no security and open to the world. Would it be ok to just remove the power supply to the broadband connection or do I need to keep a firewall running. Gear up. Bealine

I don't know he easy for it is for you to do this, but I'm on broadband, and I just unplug the cable. Of course atm, my cable has to stretch across the floor and plug into the wall untill I redecorate, so it's usually unplugged when not in use anyway.

I have an AB switch on my cable and I just open the cable connection until I am finished with FS then I close the connection again. By doing this, you won't need to be disconnecting and reconnecting the cable.

can you give details of the connection you have.. ie hardware router ??.. which software firewall etc... is there a firewall featureset in the hardware router (if present) ...

so, I presume your ethernet connection plugs into a black box supplied by the telco company, and you have no software to control this . ?

you could dump the mcafee software and install zonealarm2, it is just as good, free, and wont consume as much system resource.

I wouldnt bother disconnecting or disabling zonealarm or the router as it will make little if any difference to the performance.
best thing to do is try with, and without in fs2002 and see for yourself, if you cant see a difference, dont go to the bother of shuttingdown or disconnect.

Yes the ethernet connection is plugged into the back of the black box, also the power supply line. I have got zone alarm available so am going to connect that as the firewall and disconnect the mcafee firewall. I am thinking, it would be a bit daft to disconnect from the internet if i am going to use real world weather.if as you say zone alarm does not make any difference or very little, zone alarm would block any intruders. i appreciate your response. Im in the uk and it's a bright sunny day at 10 degrees. cheers. bealine

Hi Beeline.

I am also uk based... its 5 degrees here.. ughhh. (Lancs)
I have looked at zonealarm in depth, and, for my sins, I manage network security for the uk nhs so trust me, its a great free prog ;-)

I run an external hardware firewall / router for incoming in the shape of a dlink DI-604 and also zonealarm to control outgoing.. however, zonealarm is excellent in it's own right.

try the test with and without and let me know if you can see any difference in fs2002 performance.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-03 AT 10:47AM (EST)[p]How much memory do you have? As long as you have 512 you should be fine leaving everything on. I would NOT turn of a the firewall for any reason unless as people said you physically unplug the cable. The Internet is filled with garbage floating around which will hit your computer for even a few unprotected moments. The log on my firewall is so scary I don't even look at it anymore.

If you want, you can run FS with the firewall on and then off and see if it makes any difference. If you have a good system it shouldn't make much difference at all I would bet.

Bealine,

I load FS, file my flight plan, load "real world weather" Then disconnect from broadband.

After that you can shut down your "security programs" and whatever else you want to get more processor power.
