Default Opinions Please!

Ok, Well I am going to return my ViewSonic VA720 Moniter because it flickers during flight simulator. I am considering purchasing these LCD's. Which one do you think?

If you are using Windows XP, Have you applied the refresh rate fix? Have you tried updating the monitor drivers? I have tested several LCD's looking for a smaller footprint for my desk and none yet come close to the quality of a good CRT for simming and games - not even the expensive ones. You ought to try to solve the problem you have rather than run into a whole new world of possible troubles.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-26-02 AT 08:29AM (EST)[p]http://www.flightsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3e0a126354d10707.gif. HI, I recently Bought a new Computer, the Compaq Presairo
6035CL Desktop PC,with a 17" FP7020 Flat Panel Monitor.It has all
the bells and whitsels with it.Pentium 4 2.4 Processer,Geforce2
Grafics Card.120gb drive.with Windows Home XP edition .I too was
a little concerned about what I had heard about the differences
between a flat monitor and a regular CRT type.So I asked if I could Swap the flat monitor for the CRT type. The compaq computer
comes as a package deal.So I could not Swap.Well I thought that
I would go ahead and try it anyway. After a week of useing the new
Flat monitor,I went back and Bought a Sylvania 19" CRT type.and I
Have been using the New Sylvania for about 4 months now. There is
a lot of difference .The Flat monitor,Was a little Grainie looking to me.The CRT is a lot Clearer and Sharper Picture.I agree that You should Persue getting your CRT type working again.
I am without a Doubt sure that you would be much Happyer with the
CRT type rather that the Flat type.I hope this Helps,Ron.Vorak.

Yes, I have the refresh rate fix, the latest drivers for my BIOS, the latest video drivers, all of that. The moniter was clearly designed for 2d applications. I think I am going to buy the DELL LCD, because it is designed for gaming and I have heard good things. Anyone running a Dell LCD out there?

Well, first of all, you should always try on a CRT monitor to have resolutions that allow at least 70Hz refresh rate so that your eyes don't hurt as much. I do have to agree that LCD's are always nicer on your eyes than CRT's, but you do have to realize that LCD's have one big disadvantage: GHOSTING. This means that since the LED's take a while to turn off (~25ms depending), things on the monitor that move really fast will seem to have a "shadow" behind it. Some newer LCD's reduce that ghosting, but I have yet to see an LCD that has absolutely no ghosting.

If you do buy an LCD, just makes sure it has the lowest response rate.

Here is a very helpful website which you may want to see:

LAST EDITED ON Dec-28-02 AT 12:00PM (EST)[p]I'm going to wager that the flicker you are seeing is due to ghosting as well. The inability of the pixels to turn off and on *fast* causes images in motion to blur and flicker.

I tried the Samsung 19" LCD, and while it was flat out georgous in 2D (and non-moving 3D), textures in motion such as MSFS ground and buildings moired and blurred like crazy. It was a shame.

I'm now running a Viewsonic VX900 and I enjoy it immensely. There IS a bit of flicker, and no matter what LCD you go with these days you WILL see it, but it is a matter of personal preference (ie: how much flicker you can take before it becomes distracting) I discovered the Samsung 19" had way too much (Samsung makes many of the Dell-branded LCD's), the Sony's were good (but $$), and the Viewsonic fit my quality standards and price range perfectly.

Traditional refresh rates are *NOT* important with LCD's... they really only effect CRT's and their vertical scanning. LCD's don't have any vertical scanning - the entire picture is drawn at once. Most LCD's have analog-to-digital converters that are optimized for 60hz! LCD's are only limited by the *pixel* refresh rate. The faster that is, generally, the better the image quality will withstand motion.

Good tests of LCDs in FS...
* Slew around with sharp (fully rendered) textures.
* Fly around a city at night. How are the buildings?
* Look out the SIDE windows as you fly near autogen trees. Acceptable?

For a true hardcore gamer, LCD's aren't a good investment. (Unless it's hardcore solitare). But for you mixed-use people, they're great!

We have a few years to wait until we get the perfect LCD. :)

I talked to dell and they gaurentee that their new LCDs will not 'ghost' of flicker. If there is any problem I can return it for a refund. Still they do gaurentee this.

Well, that's good. If they guarantee that it will not ghost, then I would say you can buy it. Just make sure that you will not be charged a return fee.

Personally I would not have an LCD because LCD's will not work with 3D glasses.

I dont use the 3D glasses anyways, so i'm not too concerned about it. And if i ever do, I still have my old CRT that i can hook up. I'll order the dell when I get back from my vacation and I'll let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for the advice!
