Thread: Why no repaints?

    Default Why no repaints?

I've noticed in a couple readme's of freeware add-on planes that the designer states "you may not repaint this plane for distribution" and/or "you may repaint it for yourself only", etc.

Standard practice of repainting an airplane is to give credit to the plane's creator, anyone whose work you elaborated on, and to release the texture files only. So why wouldn't a designer/author want people to enjoy their plane in this way? I'm not trying to whine or critisize...well, just a little bit of whining:-)...I'm honestly curious.

    Several possibilities:
    - they want to release repaints themselves in the future and don't want others to beat them to it
    - they don't want their name associated with inferior quality repaints done by others
    - they have had their planes repainted by others in the past without getting credit and decided that enough is enough

its unfortunate because there are a number of freeware painters whose skills surpass those of the original authors. Ashame to deny the simming public of both great models and great skins.

I take it you don’t know who ejoiner is. I am sure Ace will agree with me, but there are very few people in the same league as Eric Joiner. Of all those who have posted in this thread so far including myself he is top dog.
I get miffed when I see planes or companies with “no repaint” policies. But on the other hand I cringe when I see mediocre repaints of beautiful airplanes. I personally repainted the Captain Sim MiG months ago and refused to release them because I didn’t think they lived up to the high standard set by the makers. Only after CS released a legitimate paint kit did I redo and release my repaints.

Three very good reasons but I would have to say (from experience) that it's that third one that's the clincher most often.
People repaint a plane and either forget to include the requested credit text or legal text files from the original author or they strip them from the repainted upload.
The reason why one would get mad is because once uploaded, any file can go in any direction and is difficult to call back. If for example the legal text isn't in the file then it can be sold by another party without any recourse by the original author.
This isn't to say that it happens all that often but it does happen.
i have also had situations where a "repainter" might not only repaint but they might start meddeling with the anel or the flight dynamics. It's real easy to "adjust" a few numbers and then try to take credit for a complete overhaul. Aafter this has happened a few times, one gets real gun shy about anyone repainting anything especially considering the amount of time that one person can put into the original craft.
