Thread: WARNING!

    Default WARNING!

Found out the hard way about viruses today!

I discovered I had acquired a virus called W32.KLEZ-H. Apparently I picked it up through one of the many downloads (aircraft/scenery/etc) over the net. My computer was starting to bog down and it turned out to be this virus replicating itself over and over in my computer! I went to Symantec.com (at the direction of an MS rep) and did a scan. It found the virus and told me how to remove it using a special tool (program).

My computer is now virus free and I'm now the proud owner of a brand new copy of NORTON ANTIVIRUS! I didn't own one before...

Just a reminder to upgrade your anti-virus software... I never thought about picking something up in FS Software....

That is one of the more prolific ones, and can be a bear to eliminate.

Your advice about updating your virus software is good, sound advice. I check for updates for mine at least twice a week.

For anyone not running A/V software......Please install some kind of package. There are a number of commercial products, as well as some freeware ones.

Darrell, Always good advice. I run MCAfee and update regularly however I have always trusted Flightsim downloads. Guess I'll scan each zip before installation. Anyway, was wondering, does FlightSim scan uploads for virus' before release? Thanks, Paul

I believe that they are scanned, but I'm not 100% sure. It seems that was one of the reasons that most uploads are not available as quickly here. Maybe Nels will see this post, and address that.

I have bought the EZ Antivirus, and they send me all days an
    upgrade.
Have you heard something about EZ A.V.? It's effective?

Did you know if it causes problems with FS2002?

    Thanks and

    Cheers

I've heard about it, but have zero experience or knowledge about it. There are many programs available, and it's hard to say which one is best. I use Pc-Cillin 2002, and have only had one non-damaging virus hit me in six years or so. Whenever there is an update, I'm automatically notified, so the update is very easy. The updates usually come every Tuesday, but I check very frequently anyway.

Unfortunately, I receive e-mail containing the Klez virus just about every day. From the (jumbled) headers, it appears that many of these come from the flight sim community. While I don't suspect anyone of intentionally sending these, it would behoove us all to ensure that we're not transmitting the Klez virus ourselves.

    Thanks Darrell

I will continue with my EZ up to the time that someone advises
    me to a better A.V!!

Mcafee anti-virus is definately my program of choice- although I really only use corporate products. Symantec AV corporate, the other leading competitor, has issues- namely technology licensed from Intel, which is no longer supported and very buggy. PC-Cillin was always pretty good too. Symantec and Mcafee are the leaders in heuristics, which can catch viruses that aren't even known yet, but it can also destroy an exchange database if you're not careful. I haven't heard of EZ AV. With any AV program, you should be able to download new definitions at least 1 a week, although I check every day. There's a new particularly nasty one out there called darkgoose that will wipe the C drive, just discovered last Wednesday. I see probably 40-100 viruses coming into various clients each week, many are non-suspicious e-mails from trusted friends that just use MAPI to send themselves to everyone they know. A mail gateway is always good in that case.
