Default FS screen resolution

LAST EDITED ON Nov-22-02 AT 10:00AM (EST)[p] I have been told that desktop resolution should be at least as high as the setting for your games. I like to run FS in 1152x864 but I really don't like the desktop that high.
Does anyone see a problem with keeping my desktop at 800-600 and FS at 1152x864 or higher?

Thank you

I run FS2002 at 1152x864, but otherwise keep my XP desktop at 1024x768, and never had any problems. It may depend upon how flexible your graphics card/monitor combination is.

On the other hand, if I go from a 1024x768 desktop to 1152x864 IL-2 Sturmovik, for some reason the monitor resorts to much lower refresh rate; in that case I have to start with 1152x864 before running Sturmovik.

I was given the above mentioned info by tech support for Rogue Squdron, when I asked for help with the game crashing to the desktop. FS has never given me trouble being at a higher res than the d/top,but I figured I would ask just in case.

I don't see any cause for this rule. Adjust the desktop resolution for good readability with sharp letters - for me, that's 1280x960 at 85 Hz on a 19" screen.

For FS2002, I choose the highest resolution my monitor and graphics card support, which is 1600x1200 at 75 Hz. Reading text at this resolution can not be recommended on my setup, but the graphics look a lot better than with 1280x960. No need for anti-aliasing, which messes up the text on my ATC screen (seems to be a commen nVídia problem). FS2002 shows no noticeable change in frame rates when I change resolution, so no matter if I choose 800x600 or 1600x800, it's all the same.

For other games, resolution might be a crucial factor for frame rates, so you might choose a lower one in order too keep the frames up.

Hope this helps a little!

Bye,
