Awful Framerate

Can anyone help me optomise my FSX.cfg because my framerate is bad and barely exeeds 10fps unless i am looking at an area inside the aircraft like the overhead where the fps jumps to 24 which is what i'm aiming for all the time. I know that FSX is a difficult sim to run but i would expect a little more than 9fps on my pc which is:

i5 4690k overclocked to 4.6ghz

8gb of 1866mhz ram

3gb gtx 1060

Addons installed:

A good place to start. FYI, you're going to be reading a while. http://www.simforums.com/forums/the-fsx-computer-system-the-bible-by-nickn_topic46211_post278558.html#278558

The above post is very detailed and covers a lot.

It should also be noted that the problem with your frames is likely not solely associated with your .cfg file, but is determined by a number of factors. If you're serious about a smoother FS experience, you're doing yourself a favor by reading the info in that link in its entirety.

Wish you the best!

Things to try in your FSX.cfg, but make the changes in your FSX/Settings. Turn down the slider(s) for Water_Effects into the low or high 2s. Turn down road traffic, ships, ferries and leisure boats to maybe 20%. Kill aircraft labels, unless you really need them.

Give this a try and see how it goes.

Agree with Mr Zippy. A few "fps killers" settings seems high.

Cloud density setting is a little hot... as Water effect.

Car traffic way too high for an ORBX users, most of us keep it under 10%.

If you use internal frame limiter, try 30 (or 31).

You should get better fps with your 1060.

I turned the road traffic and boat traffic down aswell as aircraft labels off and my fps minimum improved by 5-6 fps meaning I now average 20-24 fps stationary. This is still not the case for when the aircraft is moving though where it drops down to 16/17 fps and during takeoff becomes even worse (12- fps). When I am flying I get a solid 31-48 fps which is fine for me but I would love to also achieve these on the ground. Any thoughts on what could be stopping this from happening? I should also add that my fsx.exe is set to run in compatibility mode for windows 7 which slows down the starting fsx menus and could also be killing fps. I find I have to use this setting or I get a random freeze where the cursor says loading followed by a CTD with no information left in event viewer or similar programs.

Set frame rate (in cfg) to 25 fps. Get rid of clouds (for now). Move sliders down 1 notch. Water can be High 2X (for better water texture and no hit). You seem to have the tweaks for FSX in cfg so you are on right path. NOW. Set monitor res and FSX res to the same. The monitor res 'rules'. Then we have to ask 'Chip Set drivers? GPU drivers? Cooling? Cooling because at 4.6 ghz you are PUSHING IT TO IT'S MAX, stability wise. You can still get 25 fps at 4.3 Ghz. And I don't know why you have to do 'compatability' with FSX. Never heard of anybody having to do that. More likely your CPU is just OC'd a bit too much. Good luck.

I agree. I'm not about to trawl through your entire cfg file but I notice you have a non-standard FFT, which suggests you have been fiddling. This is a waste of time unless you know why you are doing it. I would start by deleting your config file and leaving all those tweaks alone unless you are trying to solve a particular problem.

To get things working well you have to figure out what the problem is. Start by setting your sliders with reference to the known high-impact features - water, light bloom, traffic, etc. Then see where you are. Start with weather set to 'clear skies' because clouds have a big impact. Turn off anti-aliasing to see if that makes a difference.

Most likely you have some setting in your video card's '3D settings' profile that is eating up performance. AA or Transparency AA, something like that. That's where I would look.

Road traffic to 100%? Not on ALL roads and therefore it's not 'as real' in sim. The traffic on roads in Sim is dependent on how MS 'figured' the POPULATION density was for that area. As we know MS did not always get it right. So 20% road traffic is 'about right' in my opinion.

I live about 8 miles north of that photo! Now the question is.....to the OP...Do you want to sit on the ground at the airport and watch traffic on the freeway or taxi out to the runway and take off with minimal stutters? 2 other framerate killers are Lens Flare and Light Bloom.

Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer!  ✈️

okay, my framerate is now locked on 24 most of the time now as i realised one crucial thing: some of the tweaks are overwritten when you change settings within fsx. Now i'd just love to find a way to boost it a little bit more because i see flight simmers on youtube who have equivalent/worse computers than me who achieve better fps with more addons and higher settings

Update: I went onto Mat Davies' video about his fsx settings and replaced my config with his and replaced with the settings i had before. i now get a solid 30fps on the ground and it is great (might have been to do with the directx10 preview which is now turned on, maybe my graphics card favours newer technologies). I have ran into a different problem though which i think could be easily fixed: there are now little black boxes all over the ground which look ugly, i presume they're scenery items which havent loaded properly but i'm not sure. Traffic from UT2 is now also refusing to spawn although it has paired with fsx and all of the sliders are on max? Anyone know what this is and how i could fix it?

Sounds like the black boxes are from something that doesn't like DX10

Ultimate Traffic 2 has a slider to dump AI if the frame rate drops below your setting. Perhaps you set it too low for it to even start? I think I set mine for around 15 frames. If you set it right, it works out so that as you get closer to the ground for landing and the frame rates start falling off, UT2 dumps the AI so you don't have to...

The little black boxes are caused by having the DX10 Preview turned on. Turn it off and they will go away. Unless your using somethiing like Steve''s DX10 fixer using the DX10 Preview will cause nothing but problems. UT2 sometimes takes 4-5 minutes to initially spawn...how much time are you giving it?

Black boxes(streetlights, pylons..) are probably related to your ORBX collection.

And like many of us, if you want to enjoy your ORBX stuff with DX10, you will NEED

Steve's DXfixer. It fix and add the best "lightning effects" you can only get on DX10.

(Steve constantly update his software and is very active on his forum.)

And for me, just the addition of shadow in cockpit, it worth it.

i have been testing with a few different settings in fsx and have realised that to achieve stability, i need to use dx10, otherwise the fraerate once again drops to 20-24 and has spikes where it drops to 7. i wait all the time in the world and ut2 is still not spawning in any traffic although the menu appears in fsx and you hear the pairing music at fsx startup. Any thoughts on why this could be?

If you use ORBX AI traffic, it possibly "freeze" other AI traffic or

show no traffic at all on non-ORBX airports.

Thank you to all who helped e via this thread. I found that it was the fact that i was running it in "Compatibility mode for windows 7" that killed the framerate and slowed down the application. I had originally placed it in this mode as it seemed to fix crashes i was having which have now been sorted out by using Dx10. I now achieve 29-45 fps all the time and it is also extremely smooth (usually sitting at 35fps and rarely changes). Cheers for all of the help everyone has given me, all of my problems are now fixed and i can enjoy flying again!

Happy simming and best regards from Matthew!
