Confused why I cannot up-load my screenshot

Recommended Posts

I am sorry to ask this question, as this has never happened to me. I am trying to download three screenshots. In the past I have resized my screenshots to match all my pics, this time I did the same but next to the up-loader it put's my size in kb, then it is putting (!) on all three. Don't understand why. If needed I will try & do a printscreen showing. Many thanks. Kenny

Welcome to the "ever expanding" club, Kenny. This has been the case for a lot of us. I've done all of the cookie clearing, Adobe Flash/Shockwave updates, etc and I still have to use the "basic uploader" to put the screenshots into my post. We should all PM Rick at the same time about this!

Try clicking on the basic uploader that I have circled.

Could some of you that are/were having problems, please test the advanced

uploading feature again. The problem is that we have managed to

get all browsers/OSs working. The ones that didn't just needed to be updated.

We did make a change to the security system this morning that may help.

Since ours all work, we can not recreate the problem.

So if you could (kindly) post your results of a new test as of the time of this post,

it would be quite helpful.

Thank you,

Rick

Works. Done with FireFox 50.1.0 (up to date) on Win7-64bit.

I also tried with Opera on desktop. THere I still get the basic uploader. Probably something in my Opera settings on my end.

Will try other browsers (IE-11 and K-Meleon) on desktop later.

(Probably won't post the pics. Just see if they upload, then check in preview, and report back)

Image sizes in last image. (And-- thanks guys!!)

I edited that post real quick. Fast enough to not register.

I had uploaded r1-r2-r3-r4, all in one go.

Sent post.

made a new pic

I deleted the last pic, r4

and added r5 instead.

Later removed r5, replaced with r8. Had forgotten you asked for dimensions as well.

Got it working from K-meleon, and from IE-11.

In IE-11 I got only the basic uploader at first. Got the multi uploader after switching off "ActiveX-FIltering".

In K-meleon everything worked rigt away.

Only one screenshot here, but three would have worked too.

Now image sizes also shown in screenshot.

In Opera I kept getting the basic uploader.

I tried a lot of things, but couldn't get the multi upload to show.

I looked into enabeling ActiveX. And found that Java needed to be working to be able to do that.

That led me to checking if Java was installed correctly. And after a while I found out that Java was no longer supported on Opera.

I think that is the reason the multi-upload doesn't show is because of missing Java (And therefore also not allowing activeX).

RIck, is that correct?

Btw, I also found that, as far as I can see, FIrefox is planning to stop supporting Java in 2017 as well.

If Java is needed for the multi uploader then that is something to be aware of.

We don't use Java. However we do try to make extensive use of javascript/ajax

as is the standard of the day. Most functions will work even with javascript disabled

but you lose some features. As you may or may not know, that lets you change the

pages dynamically without reloading the whole page. The comment section is a good

example of that.

Hi rick,

You said the site did not require Java, but that without it there may be some missing functionality.

But you did not clearly say if java was required for the multi uploader.

I decided to force thing a bit.

Java does seem to be involved.

I enabled Java in Opera. Now the Multi-ploader shows!

I used the method described here.

Installing the Chrome extension, and then the IE-Tab extension. I restarted Opera.

I went to flightsim.com. Then logged in and switched on "IE Tab"/ Then the multi uploader showed and worked.

read for an hour online about it.

Found: Java is completely different from JavaScript.

Then searched: "JRE required for javascript?"

But conflicting answers. still clear a smud.

Cup overfloweth, but coffecup ran dry.

I'll read more online later.

Some questions you can answer perhaps. That would help me searching for the right answers.;)

you said:

"I don't even have Java installed on this computer"

Did you mean JRE by that?

Also, are you using a browser that supports Javascript?

In other words. Did you try with Opera, and did you get the multi uploader even without using the "IE-Tab" method? Or were you using something else.

Off to make a pot of coffee.

Thanks for pushing me to look into this. That was long overdue.

I've even got the urge to try and use the Java programming language to try and make a simple program. (Maybe I should say App?) But that's a whole different story. Not Javascript, but Java.

I saw some examples online of programming in Java that reminded me of basic (Not BASIC) programming we learned in school.

I continued and searched for "verify JavaScript in web Browser?" on google.

I found this javascript detection page:

https://www.whatismybrowser.com/detect/is-javascript-enabled

In Opera, in a normal tab that reported: Yes, JavaScript is enabled.

In an "IE-Tab" opened page that reported also: Yes, JavaScript is enabled.

I then went to the the Oracle link that shows if you google: "verify java in browser"

(That link/page by the way is called: "Verify Your Java Version". (Nothing about script mentioned.)).

This is the "Verify Your Java Version" page:

https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

When I open that page in Opera in a normal tab, it says: unable to detect Java on your computer.

When I open a tab in Opera, and then use the "IE-Tab" mode, it says, "Congratulations, you have the corret Java version. Version8 Update 121."

I also tried using the multi uploader again in both ways.

Normal tab--Only get the basic uploader.

Inside an "IE-Tab" opened page--Multi uploader shows.

Java is obviously a confusing term. It's still clear as mud to me. But as far as I can see:

Javascript alone being enabled in browser is not enough.

"Java" needs to be enabled in browser too.

(what is meant by that last "java" is what is still somewhat uncler to me. It's obviously not the programming language, maybe the "Plugin".) (which I'm guessing is Opera using the java plugin that is instlalled in IE.)

Edit: That seemed to be the only conclusion. I now realise, It could perhaps also mean that inside an "IE-Tab" page there is some other setting inherited from IE-11 that affects this. For example that ActiveX setting.

Need another break, but will do more testing later.

I switched Java off in IE.

First I tried to do that by switching off "Java Plug-In SVV helper" "Java Plug-In 2 SVV helper".

After that, when in IE, the "verify your java version" page said "Unable to detect java".

But, in Opera, in an IE-Tab" page, "verify your java version" page said "You have correct version of Java installed".

I found info saying: "the only way to switch off Java in IE completely, is to Switch it off from the Java Menu in Windows Control Panel."

I then did that.

Now in IE the java addons were not listed in the addons menu anymore.

I tested for Java in IE-11, - "Unable to detect Java"

I tested for Java in an "IE-tab in Opera", -now also: "Unable to detect Java"

Ok, good so far.

Now with java disabled in browsers, I tried uploading.

in Opera in an IE-Tab--Multi uploader showed.

in IE-11--Multi uploader showed.

in Opera in a normal tab--Multi uploader did not show.

Hadn't expected that.

Conclusion: I was wrong. It was not Java related.

(Getting the basic uploader was not because of missing Java in Opera.)

(Because now with it missing in IE, IE still showed multi-upload. And so did Opera in an "IE-Tab" page.)

--------------------------------------------------------

But what then.

I left Java disabled via control panel.

I went and enabled "ActiveX Filtering" in IE-11.

result:

in IE-11 -- Only basic uploader.

in Opera normal tab -- only basic uploader.

in Opera "IE -Tab" page -- Multi uploader shows.

Only thing I can think of is that Opera may inherit IE's capability of running activeX, but does not inherit "ActiveX-Filtering" setting from IE.

This is one deep rabbithole.... pfeeew.

please save me another 2 hours of searching.

in IE, when I enable "activeX filtering" the basic uploader is all I get.

Now you mention Flash. Does ActiveX have something to do with flash or something??

Feeling really thick here. Please understan, I just do some readiing, see one of these plugins/addons/blah is needed for what I want my programs to do, and install it. So iven if most of these thing have been installed on my system for a long time, I knew little to nothing about them.

I heard you mention that about flash before. As far as I can see flash is enabled in all browsers, and I think has been all the time.

Nevermind. I Googled:

is activex required for flash?

I found: " Internet Explorer's Flash player is an ActiveX control."

That explains why switching on: "enab;e activex filtering" in IE - I get only basic uploader.

-----

It also eexplains why I get the basic uploader in a normal Opera tab.

Opera does not do ActiveX. There is a way to install that.

Not sure I want to go that route.

---------

It doesn't fully explain why the multi-uploader shows in Opera in an "IE=Tab" page,

even when ActiveX filtering is enabled in IE.

]

Possibly Opera uses IE's ActiveX capability in an "IE-Tab", without listening to IE's setting for "enable ActiveX filtering"

I tried Googling that for info, but it is a bit of an oscure subject.

Sorry about pointing to Java/JavaScript earlier. It seemed a logical explanation at the time, but I was wrong.

Ok, sigh.

I had in Opera "enable flash content" checked in the settings. So I assumed that part of the equation was OK.

It wasn't.

I looked in "about://plugins"

No "Flash Player" listed there.

I looked for how to install flash in Opera. Answer was to run the Flash installer.

I was sure I had installed Flash on my PC some time (month or more) ago. And I assumed Opera should have detected the Flash Player on my PC.

(Opera was installed only a week or two ago)

But it seems that had not happened automatically.

I ran the Flash Player installer.

Now Flash Player shows in my addons list (about://plugins) in Opera.

and in a normal page in Opera -- The multi uploader works!!!!!

Thanks rick. All fixed!

And I think that after I let all of this sink in, I may actually wake up tomorrow understanding some of this.:D

Thanks again!
