Default Surprising results from lowering FPS lock

I spent a few hours today experimenting with display settings and was surprised to see that when I lowered the FR setting from 25 to 20 it cleared up the blurries quite a bit.And (now the strange part)at 23fps the fr hit during my testing was from 25 to 16.After lowering to 20fps the amount of fr lost decreased; now just from 20 to 18.And with the blurries almost gone the 3d effect really comes to life.
I wish I knew how to upload screenies, the diference is huge.
Pleas note,in future posts I will no longer refer to 3d accl cards as video cards;from this day forward they are 'magical mystery boards'.

By changing the fps setting you just tell your simulator which are your preferences. You determine what your computer resources should be used for. If you i.e. choose a high value you give priority to a fluidly running simulation. If you choose a low value the computer is allowed to use more resources for better images or display quality...

That's what we've all been saying for about a year now.
    Back off the sliders

Everyone wants 50+ frame rates then complain of the fuzzies.
Everyone wants 100+ AI planes in the air then complain of slow performance.
unless you have a megga machine to drive all that stuff. Most do not.
I have mine set at 20fps. Nice clear screen even on a 18" lcd at 75htz.
I like the twins and bush flying and would rather see nice scenery.
Others like the liners and fly at 30k agl. It's mostly up to the flyer.

At the risk of repeating myself for the umpteenth time, but in deference to the continued vagaries of the search engine:

Place this line inside FS2002.cfg under the section starting (MAIN)
    AVE_FRAME_RATE_DISPLAY=1

    Then launch the sim.

Disable the fps limiter (turn it up to No Limit) then open the Ctrl-Z window with the frame rate counter. You see you now have extra settings: fps max, min, average - and percentage variation between.
It seems to reset regularly so try two or three different scenarios like: On the ground at a busy airport; on take-off over detailed scenery or mesh; flying at VFR heights; flying at IFR Flight Levels or whatever meets your needs.
I suggest taking a `snapshot` of frame rates at these different points over ten or fifteen seconds only but do not leave the text window open longer than necessary as it costs fps by itself!

In each case make a note of the settings, especially the average and the percentage variation....

Using the average fps as a starting point, lower the FPS slider until the variation is at the minimum, say around 5-10 percent or less, again repeating the testing in your different flight environments. The blurries are symptoms of wide variations in fps. Reduce those, reduce the blurries. Reduce the frame limit and increase system resources elshwere. It's all good.

In other words, end up with a ceiling-limited fps that is close, or slightly below, the average frame rate measured in the window. You may choose which of the measured `averages` from which flight regime is most important to you and you type of flying and the sim is then optimised for that particular environment.

If you make any changes to scenery or texture settings you may need to repeat the exercise.

However, to recover frame rates to acceptable levels in a `high stress` system environment the most effective slider is the aircraft texture slider, as this not only reduces aircraft complexity, but also that of clouds (as Chris noted the other day) and also ground scenery and autogen. The adjustment in this slider does not cause a pause and re-load of textures and can be done very quickly.

I am looking at a way of controlling this slider from keyboard commands so that you don't even have to open the menu bar, but it might take me a while...

Thank you for the screen upload link. I prefer a fast, smooth sim over great looking scenery, and that's what I was working on when I 'stumbled' across the increase in scenery quality. Hey,I'll take it!Like I said, things got smoother too.I spend most of my time under FL180 in F18's so I need scenery to load fast and keep up.Anyway, looks good now, sure is more fun.
