Does REX's "Soft Clouds" product fix this haze (visibility) layer issue

Recommended Posts

Im sick of seeing this.

That is the result of moving the camera from one weather station boundary into the next.

Is there a 3rd party addon which will improve the look of the visibility layer when viewed from above??

It seems ORBX have something in one of their documents showing exactly what I want. Is it perhaps a feature in REX soft clouds?

or is it just photoshopped? or just a particular 3D cloud set at just the right altitude?

What you see in the Orbx screenshot is volumetric fog in P3D and no, Soft Clouds won't change a thing except your low cloud textures (cumulus01.bmp). I believe ASN does something for this problem in FSX while it's running, there's a setting called "disable default haze layer", which as near as I know modifies cirrus_overcast03.bmp.

You might experiment with this file:

That 'haze' is visible because you are above the visibility layer. If you were flying inside the visibility layer that would not happen. You can move the visibility layer's 'top' (altitude) UP to fix. You can also set how far you can see when inside the layer (30 miles is 'ok'). If you want to see less 'in the horizon' then reduce the 'visibility distance' to 10 miles. If you want to be inside a 'fog bank' reduce the distance to '1/4' or '1/2' mile. To get the clouds to be off the horizon move the 'bottom' line of CLOUD LAYER (not visibility layer) to 6,000 ft (or 8,000 ft). Best to go to 'World/Weather/Advanced/Custom' and learn by doing (and going to look at result). You should spend at least and hour 'testing', at all hours of day. Just pause the sim, go make changes and unpause to see result - repeat with different settings. You can also slew up/down to check out the visibility layer and cloud layer(s). Make it fun, not work, and you won't even notice 2 hours gone by. Being there-done that.

I know why it happens, my fix is to just set visibility to desired level and then create a new visibility layer above it and set it to 40 or 50. the sim doesn't draw the harsh line doing this because it considers all visibility layers seamless, so as long as you are in a visibility layer, it wont draw the harsh line on the layer below you. With all due respect, i dont need to learn anything, ive been using flight sim since FS1995.

I use REX but not ASN. anyone have a screenshot of how ASN deals with mountains peaking into fog? My problem is not with the line of fog itself, rather the way the fog continues right up to a mountain. in real life, terrain holds latent heat and fog dissipates with a gradient up to the side of a hill.

FSX is not a nature simulator and not everything is 100% as in real life. You are like the persons who want the stars, planets, seasons, and sun rise and sun set all to match up with what is outside their windows. Let's get realistic here.

this is the first time ive ever joined an FSX forum and posted a question on how to achieve something (a product or look) ive seen on the web. and i get likened to some sort of stereotype of a person expecting too much. perhaps these forums arent for me.

It doesn't matter what forum you join you will always find rude people like that. For that reason I say little and only use the forums to search information. If I can't find it in one I find it in another. Only ask questions if you have to as a last resort. That's how I do it anyway. It keeps me from wanting to smack people. :)

Active Sky Next for FSX and P3D does a really good job of replacing the haze layer with a more realistic one. It is my opinion, if you want this, you will have to get Active Sky Next; it is worth it, to me. Also, for the more realistic clouds, REX provides several options. I use them, too.

As to those who are being rude, frankly to them, you don't need a forum to tell people you aren't there to help them. They are the ones with the problem.
