What do you think... thoughts would be helpful...

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm sorry if this isn't quite the right section for this posting but I guess it is in a way!

Anyway, would some of you be kind enough to take a look at this link to Ebay.

I'm thinking of buying this system to fun FSX on and would like to know if it has enough power to cope with running

FSX with almost all siders set to max.

(I've made an offer lower than that shown BTW!)

I've been out of the sim world for a few years and last used FS2004 so not to clear on what type of computing power is needed for FSX.

Thanks in advance for any/ all help you can give.

(ps: I would be looking at buying a ready made system as I'm hopeless at buying or assembling anything electrical!)

I think if you want FSX with all slider full high, or right, or up, or whatever, you'd need a Cray or similar.

AMD processors are not the best, really. and being a 32 bit program, FSX can't access more that 2GB RAM. Having more helps keep the OS from using CPU cycles the Sim uses, but still...

You WILL need to trun some things down to be able to use FSX in any meaningful way. If/when you get a new system, you will have to load FSX up and then make adjustments to suit that particular system. Every one is different, and every person's preferences are too. Do you want to buzz along at 40,000' and push buttons? Do you want to buzz your house in a Cub?

Etc etc.

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

WOW! $1,950+ US dollars, if my exchange rate is current! I can't imagine you'd not find a better priced box that does great at a lower price than that! And there has been considerable discussion for years that many/probably most feel FSX runs better on Intel processors. I'd certainly at least do more shopping.

As to the buy a box issue, isn't there some reputable shop over there that would build you a box? If I were you, I'd start a thread WHO IN THE UK WILL CUSTOM BUILD ME A FSX WORTHY COMPUTER? And if I got the response I hoped for, I'd ask for a fast Intel i7 to go in it.

Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll put an ad up asking for UK based simmers who may be able to help/ build one for me.

Phantom tweak - sorry the technical side goes over my head its the result of an illness which damaged my brain - certain things just don't mean a thing! hence asking for help and ideally looking for links directly to a suitable machine...

Anyway, thank you for such quick replies!!:D

@ Captain Cupcake.....

As your based in the UK I would suggest making sure your browser is pointed to google.co.uk and then use the search phrase custom PC. It will throw up a lot of UK based companies that sell readymade and customable PCs.

Here are just few that have a good reputation:

http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/?gclid=CP7Y9IeHncsCFeUy0wodvLADwQ

For example the first link landing page has a system similar to the one you linked but with a Intel CPU, monitor, keyboard and mouse for roughly the same price. However, as you customise it, you could make a few minor changes and save some money (or spend more if you want to get a higher spec).

For example, you could drop the RAM memory down to 8Gb (but no lower) - FSX is a 32-bit app and therefore, as with all 32-bit apps, can only access a maximum of 4Gb - having 8Gb will allow the OS to perform background tasks without stealing memory from the sim. Going with 16Gb is an overkill if the rig is solely to be used for FSX.

Regards

Brian
