It is from our Library, just presented today, the name is:FSX Garmin GPS 500 Replacement Gauge and offer lot new opportunity using the GPS 500, replace de Garmin 500..

OK, I saw the download. I am not on my home computer, and won't be for 2 weeks, so I can't download to see the README. I can assume a .cab file needs to be installed to your FSX/Gauges folder and then an entry to the panel.cfg so the new gauge can be displayed.

Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer!  ✈️

It looks intersting, but I want to run it to see how it looks, works, etc. The one review says that the cab is misnamed.

We shall see what we shall see.

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

Well, you're right. When you click the included Icon on a panel, or pop it up with a shift+X key combination, you get the default Garmin 295.

I know I installed it properly.

From what I can tell, and I am Very very far from being a pro XML programmer, there is no line in the XML file defining the image name, no lines defining the macro's, and so on.

To my little pea brain it looks like maye it's not quite complete yet? The author left out some important lines? I don't know.

I DO know it's non-funtional as downloaded, but it'll take someone a lot better at XML than I am. For now, I'm going to ignore it until the author responds :D

cab name: Gps.cab

xml name inside it: GPS.xml

internal name. (first line of the xml file):

[Windownn]

Background_color=0,0,0

size_mm=800,670

windowsize_ratio=0.76

position=7

visible=0

ident=537

gauge00=GPS!GPS, 0,0,800,670

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inside the .CAB is also another .xml, name:

GPS - Copy.xml

Internal name (first line in the .xml file "GPS -copy.xml"):

---------------------------------------------------

ADDING: And a third .xml for the icon:

GPS Icon.xml

(not important here I think.)

--------------------------------------------------------

I'll have a closer look too if I find the time.

Bushed.

Will do a brief test flight in a bit with that gps. First stretch legs.

Yep, installed, and it shows the Garmin 295. Same as in ultralight and in glider.

I uncabbed, using Cabdir.exe (sdk-tool)

then renamed "GPS - copy.xml"

to

GPS.xml

same difference. Sill the 295 garmin shows. Alas.

Weird though. THe Cab contains all kind of images that look like they belong to the Garmin500 that is advertised in the .pdf file in the download.

Maybe wrong .xml included by mistake.

------------------

Google -garmin 500 fsx download-

came up with this.

No idea if it's any good.

I've got it!

as I told mrZippy:

cab name: Gps.cab

xml name inside it: GPS.xml

internal name. (first line of the xml file):

-------------------------

Problem here is, the internal name must be the same as the name of the .xml file itself.

As you see it is not.

One is "GPS"

the other "GPS Gauge"

-------------------------------

I fixed it by:

Uncabbing,

Renaming GPS.xml

to

GPS Gauge.xml

(so it is the same as the internal name)

Changing the panel.cfg section to:

[Windownn]

Background_color=0,0,0

size_mm=800,670

windowsize_ratio=0.76

position=7

visible=0

ident=537

gauge00=GPS!GPS Gauge, 0,0,800,670

------------------------------------------------------

Notice that, in all places,

GPS

is replaced by:

GPS Gauge

(And notice there is a space between GPS and Gauge.)

-------------------------------------

To do this you will need to be able to uncab.

The sdk contains a tool for that, Cabdir.exe.

I hear sometimes mixed sounds about using WinZip/7zip to uncab. Some say it works, others say it doesn't.

If you uncab you don't need to re-cab it again. Placing the created folder

"GPS"

into /Gauges will work just as well.

--------------

hope that gets you going.

I added a link to this thread in the comments for the download.

FSX Garmin GPS 500 Replacement Gauge

Name: gps.zip

Size: 1,267,786 Date: 11-23-2015 Downloads: 241

FSX Garmin GPS 500 Replacement Gauge. This is a gauge that is intended to replace the Garmin GPS500 standard gauge for FSX only that appears on many panels. It does everything that the GPS500 does plus more. Although it does not replicate any real gauge it is intended to have a similar look and feel to the interactive synoptic displays on the Boeing 787. Additional features to the GPS500 are ILS frequency tuning, auto VOR and NDB tuning, selectable VOR and NDB tuning, detailed flight plan, one-click approach selection, uncluttered map display with selectable layers, hi-res terrain maps, flight plan map, and TAWS map. It should work on any aircraft but a reasonably hi-res monitor should be used for best results. Instructions to install on any panel are included. By G. Munro.

I'm not sure.

I don't think the "GPS - Copy.xml" gets used, as it is not called up from the panel.cfg file.

I'm not sure if one .xml can 'call' or 'load' another .xml file.

But, it is not a exact copy. There's quite a lot of difference between the files.

They start out the same, and are around 80% the same at a guess.

(according to winmerge at least.)

----------

To use this file instead of "GPS.xml'

You could leave GPS.xml alone

and

you could insead rename:

"GPS - Copy.xml"

to

"GPS Gauge.xml"

Then make that change in the panel.cfg as well. The exact same thing just as I described earlier, in post#16.

(So the panel.cfg refers to "GPS!GPS Gauge")

This is a really cool gauge!

It shows the traffic around you,

It has a TAWS (terrain altitude warning system), terrain above your altitude is shown in red,

Shows airports as if you are looking at the map,

(all that in on view)

and much more.

Really really cool!

I didn't use the icon. I open it with shift-9

and the default gps is still there.

I installed in the default fsx b737-800

I make my "direct to" flightplan using the default gps (shift-3),

then keep an eye on things using the new gps, (shift-9)

----

I'll have a look how to add that. Did the icon not work??
