Being very new to flight simming as well as pretty useless when it comes to my pc, can someone direct me to a complete tutorial on adding aircraft, textures and scenery please. I sometimes add aircraft and nothing shows up, I add mesh and scenery and seem to loose it...the only time I am really successful is when the read file says dump the entire contents into 'aircraft' - I can do that. I have downloaded FSX onto my laptop and experiment on there so I don't mess up what I have on the pc, but it is more often than not random hit or miss.

Anywhere to send this hopeless person?

:)

Go to the upper Blue Bar, Click on Articles-do the drop-down to Tutorials. You will have to do some searching but there are tutorials for all that you need. Also Google search about adding aircraft, sceneries, etc to FSX.

Last, but not least, ask about specific downloads in the FSX Forum. There are lots of us that will be able to help.

And for good measure here's a little tutorial I put together to help a dood who was having trouble adding a Boeing 777-

DOWNLOAD TUTORIAL

Okay this is how I did it, the same way I've been doing it for years with FS2004 and FSX-

1- download the file to Desktop

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/ExIS/dlA.jpg

2- Unzip it-

3- The unzipped yellow folder will now appear somewhere on desktop-

4- Click it to examine its contents, note the name of the plane is in its own subfolder-

5- Click the subfolder and you'll see the essential six things every aircraft in FSX must have, namely Model/Panel/Sound/Texture/cfg file/Aircraft file

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/ExIS/DLE.jpg

6- Go back and Copy the plane subfolder-

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/ExIS/DLf.jpg

7- and Paste it into the FSX 'Airplanes' folder-

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/ExIS/DLg.jpg

8-and bingo! it should appear in the list of aircraft..:)

As a for instance. I tried to download a Malvinas mesh which are in files called:

Islas Malvinas_X9 (1). BGL

Islas Malvinas_X9 (2). BGL

These need to go in Addon scenery/scenery

I do that then go to add scenery and navigate to the scenery file and it comes back with 'No items match your search'.

I seem to have no luck with any of these terrain files in Simviation.

If you add .bgl files to your Add-On Scenery\scenery folder, the game automaticaly reads them, rebuilds it's databases to take them into account, and uses them, because the \scenery folder is already IN the Scenery Library as an active area.

If you add a new folder with the scenery and texture folders in it to your Add-On Scenery folder, you have to manually tell the Scenery Library to add it into the active areas in the game. It will then rebuild it's databases etc etc, and start utilizing it.

Normally, if updates to add-on sceneries become available, you don't need to "install" them, just place them into the scenery folder that is already extant in the scenery library, replacing the old ones, or adding to them. But because the folder they are going into is already IN and active in the Scenery Library, you don't need to manually add them in.

You will need to restart the game, if you do something like that, so it can read the new stuff and rebuild it's databases, however. IE: you get an update to SceneryX that you are utilizing already while you are flying along to your destination. If you just throw them into the FSX\Add-ON Scenery\SceneryX\scenery folder, they won't be utilized until you exit your flight, and either go into the Scenery Library tab in the Settings menu and then exit out if it, so it reads the new stuff and rebuilds it's databases, or exit the game completely and restart it.

Does this help answer your questions at all?

Pat☺

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

Once the files are placed into the Addon Scenery/Scenery folder there is nothing more to do other than start your Sim and watch the loading take place on the loading status bar. Once that's completed your scenery mesh (mess??) is ready for use.
