Night environment very dark.

I don't remember whether it's been this dark always or not, but it is dark to the point I can hardly see the city from the altitude of 4000 ft - it's all black outside with some small yellow dots (lights). I think I have Orbx night textures but not sure what's going on there. How do I get it to look like this? ->

I can only speak for default FSX but check your World>Weather>Customise>Advanced weather>Visibility tab to see if a low-vis band hasn't crept in at 4000 and higher.

This is the tab, delete any rogue vis band-

For the record, this is default FSX Chicago at midnight from 5000 feet with the Vis slider set to 'Unlimited' to eliminate any haze that dulls lights-

And for comparison this is how things get dull with the Vis slider cranked down to 5 miles-

And going to extremes, here's the view with Vis 1 mile-

Remember, Vis range only applies to whatever specific altitude band you choose; personally I always have just one Vis band from ground level up to 100,000 feet because life's much simpler that way, usually set to 30 miles range.

And don't forget you can adjust your monitor and/or vid card brightness/contrast settings to jazz things up if you like..:)

Eye candy shot (below)- Chicago from 1000 feet, Unlimited visibility range-

I've had that a few times at night, and it seemed that if the skies were fairly cloudy, that would happen. Clear weather made a big difference. Could that be your situation?

 Running FSX-SE on   Intel core i7-12700kf,  DDR4 16G,  Nvidia Geforce RTX3070 8gb6, 1tbm.2 pcie ssd,  on windows 11.

That's one thing I miss about the old CRT displays.. Easier to get a good night

look. With the new fangled LCD/LED backlit displays, it's hard to get everything really

dark looking. Particularly when I'm using my normal 60 bright/60 contrast display

setting. Looks fine in the day, but at night even what should be totally dark looks

slightly lit to a dark grey or whatever..

So I've been trying a different setting at night... 0 or 10 bright, and 100 contrast

at night. It does seem to be slightly better..

What's goofy is the display is capable of showing a super black black.. The contrast

ratio is supposedly 80,000,000 to 1, and the refresh rate is 1 ms. It's an ASUS VX238H..

But hard to get around that constantly glowing backlight.

Dang-it! I wish I had knew this when I started playing. I had no idea visibility had banding sections in the weather panel. Been playing for a while and kept getting ultra dark night times and thought it was my panel & gpu settings.

Mega-thanks for pointing this out mate, you just cured a headache of mines! :D

Yeah, and just to clarify it, this below is the standard basic World>Weather>User-defined-button>Customise screen which is fine for adjusting general Visibility, but if you want to put bands in, click on 'Advanced Weather' to go on to the band screen for Visibility/ Clouds /Wind-

Incidentally I own two strategy games (Red Thunder and Black Sea) that have got an option to enhance night-time displays with the click of a button, it basically helps our dumb monitors adapt to night like the human eyeball to give a more realistic display.

No way to import it into FSX unfortunately.

  • 1 month later...

Accidentally found a solution after trying all the suggestions here. The FTX Central has a lighting tweaker utility, I myself had selected the small-appearing lights and forgot about it. Now I have selected the [/b]good[/b] lights.

Been out for few months, now flying hard again... Aerosoft released Airbus 1.31 which is handled amazingly at last, Tropicalsim updated KMCI, and I found a good repaint for the PMDG MD-11 VC... The bad news iFly and PMDG sill have not completed their 747s, and Orbx has not released any NA regions besides Alaska.
