Can NOT Figure out how to install FMC in FSX Steam

Floydturbo

Recommended Posts

For two months I have tried to install the "Flight Management Computer" add on for the 737-800 in Steam FSX. I have installed, successfully, a call out minimums file and such so I somewhat understand the process. Can anyone out there tell me, in simple terms, how to download and install a FMC for FSX 737-800? Thank you.

Where most people go wrong (me included) in adding in Garrets FMC, is that I didnt extract the default CAB. If you extract the CAB to a folder, and drop in the FMC files the game should read them first before the default cab.

As for the gauges themselves, go down to the "VC" entry in the gauge config and add in the FMC gauges code in the read me.

That *should* do it. If not let us know.

You'll have to forgive me. I don't understand "extract." Is this the default CAB you describe? HoneywellFMC.CAB

What folder do extract it to? I think I get the dropping of the FMC files but not 100 percent sure. I am one of those who needs to get through it one time successfully to really understand. I understand if you would rather not but what would help me is a little bit more detail with the installation. This is the name of the folder that downloaded. honeywellfmc Does that seem right? In the folder are four icons. 1. HoneywellFMC.CAB 2. HoneywellFMC.pdf 3. Readme.txt 4. avsim.diz does this seem right? I don't know where the FMC files are unless there are the code in the Readme.txt.

No where in the file are there anything called "gauges." Very confusing. Thank you for your help anyway...

If you can explain this part in a little more detail...

I think I understand the second part. If you can explain "extract" and also explain what folder I put the CAB file in that would help a lot. Also I don't understand "drop in the FMC files." What and where are the FMC files and where do you drop them?

Thanks again.

Ok, the basics.

In the download of fmc-1.zip are three files.

HONEYWELLFMC.CAB -- The actual gauge (the fmc)

HONEYWELLFMC.PDF -- The instructions to use the instrument.

Readme.txt -- the install instructions.

No extracting of the CAB required.

The Honeywell FMC will become a popup panel btw.

In the plane you want to put it in:

Open the panel folder. Put the HONEYWELLFMC.CAB file in there.

In the panel folder find file "panel.cfg". -- This is the configuration of your panel (and VC).

Make a copy of the panel.cfg. Keep the copy in the panel folder also. Rename it to "panel -0- orig copy.cfg"

With that copy safe you can make edits to the panel.cfg file.

In the panel.cfg file, find the section:

[Window02]
size_mm=456,378
window_size=0.5
position=8
BACKGROUND_COLOR=0,0,0
VISIBLE=0
ident=GPS_PANEL

gauge00=fs9gps!gps_500,            0,0

This is the GPS section.

Delete that. Notice, the section starts with [Window02], but in the plane you are changing it may have a different number.

Now open the file: "Readme.txt" from the download of the HONEYWELL.

In there you see a new section for the FMC that you need to put in.

Put it where the GPS section used to be.

Notice it starts with [WindowXX]

That's a way of saying: Change XX to the number it should be, yourself.

The same number the GPS had.

That's it. Start FSX, Go fly. Enjoy!

il88pp

Keep "panel -0- orig copy.cfg" safe as long have you use fsx, so you can always restore the original panel.

Future versions of the panel.cfg you save as

"panel -1- did this"

"panel -2- added that too"

etc.

Numbering them like that really helps.

In case you want to keep the GPS as a popup and still have the FMC:

Step 1. install the HoneywellFMC.cab to the FSX/Gauges folder

FMC in gauges folder.JPG

Step 2. Using the panel from the default 737-800, make the changes to the panel.cfg:

First of all thank you for all of your time and help. I did exactly as you said and I am confident I know what that is. When I did all of the installation and opened up the plane...nothing. I even tried to move some things around and make different combinations...nothing. I have spent so much time and effort on this thing and taken up so much of other peoples time that I think it's time to let this go for a while. I may have to find someone and hire them to physically show me how this goes. Thanks again. Dave

Far Out!!! That did it. I may have had it all along but no one told me to go to the view window and call FMC. Plus there was one step in the cfg at the top, the =10 that I didn't do. Anyway...that did it. What I was hoping was that the FMC would show up on the displays by the pilots knees but hey...I'll take what I can get. Thanks again! Dave

Glad you got it going! I think you can move the FMC by clicking and dragging to where you want it.;)

  • 3 weeks later...

So confused. I tried this exactly as you described and it will not show up in the "Instrument View" section. I've done this before and it worked perfectly. I'm beat!!! just don't get it. I'll keep trying. I did get the FMC to replace the GPS but, being the greedy thing I am, I would like to have the GPS and the FMC together as I had before. Any ideas? Thanks.

No need to be greedy! This is from my default 737 panel.cfg like I showed in the previous posts. The changes are in RED.

Damn...if that wasn't it. I must have had a stroke and didn't account the the list on top and that did it. Thank you so much! You are the only human out there that has taken the time to help me see this stuff. Small as it may seem to some...it's huge to me. Hope I can repay the favors someday. Thanks again.

Sorry to bug again. Here's one. I tried loading the same 737 FMC into my 747 FSX Steam version the same way you showed me. when I went to View/Instrument panel...the FMC choice was there but when I called it up it was just the outline of it and no keypad...number pad or anything else. I have tried to find an FMC in Flightsim for the 747 but no luck. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I hope you are referring to the Honeywell FMC! I just installed it to my default 747-400. It's brought up using Shift+8.

Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer!  ✈️

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi Mr Zippy, Sorry to hijack into this thread, but you have indicated the way to get the Honeywell FMC installed and working, that I am also trying to achieve this with the stock FSX 747. Followed your fantastic instructions but, can't get that FMC to appear. Saw where you said using shift + 8 to make it appear. Is this simply shift, and at the same time hold the number 8 key, or the 8/* key. In my case nothing.

What tells the computer that the FMC uses the keys shift + 8? to appear?

I put the gauge (CAB file) into my FSX gauge folder.

I edit the panel.cfg of aircraft.

[Window Titles]

Window00=Main Panel

window01=Radio Stack

Window02=GPS

window03=Throttle Quadrant

and....

What am I missing. I must be doing a dumb error some where. Is the same procedure used for the steam fsx 747? as I can attack this machine to see if the same result

For the default 747-400, it looks to be setup correctly! Press and hold the Shift key and then press the 8 (with the * over it) NOT the NUMPAD8. It's Shift+8 because of [Window07]. Always one number higher. Any window number higher than 8 means you have to go to menu-views-instrument panel-choose panel to pop it up.

Thanks for the quick reply. Though, I did use the shift and the 8 (with the * over it) and the 2d screen did not change as as I recall.

Unfortunately, the power supply died on my machine while in the middle of this, so, its off to the doctor(under warranty) to get it replaced. So, when I get it back, I shall get back to you with confirmation result.

The reason why I am trying to get this working is that I have loaded up the Project Airbus A380 and want to get this FMC working in it. So, thought I would try the "simple" aircraft first...

Does the steam version 747 behave the same way if I try and insert the FMC into it?

Do you get anything popping up?

Perhaps a black panel instead of the fmc.

Or a brief flash.

************

Also, the original [Window07] section should not be in your panel.cfg file above the new [Window07] section.

You should either delete the original [Window07] section,

Or Write // in front of each of it's lines.

like so for example:

//--------------------------------------------------------
// Full Size MFD
//[Window07]
//Background_color=0,0,0
//size_mm=341,341
//position=7
//visible=0
//ident=501
//gauge01=B737_800!mfd_screen,		0,0, 341,341
//gauge02=B737_800!mfd,		 	30,27, 280,280

placing // in front of something changes the rest of the line into a 'comment'. Handy for your convenience to remember what you did, and FSX will disregard the line when running.

Hi iL88pp. Nothing popped up, no black panel..maybe a brief flash. Because this was a new [window07] section there was no previous window07 to "//" mark out...eg

I put the gauge (CAB file) into my FSX gauge folder.

I edit the panel.cfg of aircraft by adding a new Window07=FMC

[Window Titles]

Window00=Main Panel

window01=Radio Stack

Window02=GPS

window03=Throttle Quadrant

window04=Overhead Panel

window05=Clock

window06=Mini Panel

window07=FMC

and....I inserted the details supplied by the FMC developers...

[Window07]

Background_color=16,16,16

size_mm=325,512

window_size_ratio=1.000

position=0

visible=0

ident=FMC_Panel

window_size= 0.255, 0.475

window_pos= 0.745, 0.520

gauge00=HoneywellFMC!fmc, 0,0,325,512

Now, I wondered [Window Titles] window07=fmc does the =fmc do anything other than to describe what window07 does?..Apparently, because this says 07, I must use shift and the 8 (with the * over it) to invoke it.

I am trying to see the relationship/linkage between the below three items. What tells the machine to get that FMC gauge. Do I have to make sure I have a naming convention correct? I see... ident=FMC_Panel..should this be window07=FMC_Panel??

The cab file I placed into my FSX gauge folder.

The "window07=FMC" statement and

[Window07]

Background_color=16,16,16

size_mm=325,512

window_size_ratio=1.000

position=0

visible=0

ident=FMC_Panel

window_size= 0.255, 0.475

window_pos= 0.745, 0.520

gauge00=HoneywellFMC!fmc, 0,0,325,512

"Window 07" is the 8th window because you have a "window 00" to start with for the 2d cockpit. So the FMC starting in the VC with shift+8 is normal and nothing to worry about.

Also the last two lines of the config for the FMC are wrong and should be removed.

IE

window_size= 0.255, 0.475

window_pos= 0.745, 0.520

Remove both of these because they are in conflict with your previous settings in the config.

What you have there at the top looks fine. (and is the same you posted earlier.)

I added exactly that one line, and one section, to my default 747_400 and the gauge showed and worked. I copy-pasted it in straight from your post.

I also knocked out the .cab, and left the lines in, and in that situation it shows a black panel of the same size.

------

Not sure on the questions.

I always assumed:

Window07=

is linked to

[Window07]

Window07=***

means

"If I click views--Instruments in the title bar, I shows me *** to click on as an option".

(so can be anything, and is not directly related to what is in the [Window07] section)

What is in the [Window07] -section though, that I don't know.

I first thought if the developer decided it had to be:

ident=FMC_Panel

then that was cast in stone.

After changing this one from GPS_PANEL to FMC_PANEL, with no ill effects, I'm not so sure anymore.

Maybe that's pretty fixed, maybe it could be chosen at will.
