Possible continuity error in a WWII flyhing movie? (Non -FS question).

Please feel free to beat me over the head about a non-flight-sim question, but I don't know where else to ask this.

Last night there was an episode on the Teev from the fabulous "Foyle's War" series of movies. It showed at the beginning that this particular episode was set in February 1942, and that might be significant. Near the end, the hero's son literally flew off into the sunset in his Spitfire. In the background, were two CONTRAILS. So my question is ... in February 1942, in South East England, would there have been any aircraft around that could have left contrails ???

Most any aircraft that flew in what are now the flight levels (say 20,000 feet and up) would leave contrails, though there were times when conditions were such that no contrails showed.

A contrail (condensation trail) is just condensation of moisture in an aircraft's exhaust -- it's not just a jet phenomenon.

I've seen a number of movies, or short film clips, if you prefer, of B-17's and later B-17's with their escort P-51's leaving contrails. During WWII. Actual film clips, either from film-makers who rode along with a crew for a mission, or from the crews themselves. Amazing to watch, the HUGE B-17 formations, all leaving long contrails. Almost look like a cloud, there were so many. Kinda neat, really.

Just my 2 pence worth :D

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

A massive continuity problem exists in the movie "Midway" (I just happened to watch this yesterday). When Charlton Heston takes off to attack the remaining Japanese carrier he is in an Avenger, then he is cruising in a Devastator, he flies a Dauntless during the attack, and later crashes in a Helldiver.
