N66SF
I'm trying to install FSX on my new 8.1 Laptop. I have installed FSX and SP1, which seem to work fine, but cannot install SP2. I get the error message that says "MS FSX SP2 requires the English Version of FSX", which of course it has. So I have uninstalled and reinstalled as recommended somewhere on http://www.microsoft.com. Same problem. I have installed FSX to C:Program Files (x86). Should I install to a new location, such a C:FSX? Do I need to set up a new User Account, which I think I had to do with Vista (many years ago)? If you set up a new User Account, should it be a Local account? Does the new User Account need to be the Administrator account? If so, then can my regular (non-FSX User Account) also be Administrator? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. abrussell
C:Program(x86) is subject to User Account Control. You can either close UAC in control panel or install to c:fsx (recommended) Bruce [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]I5-2500k@ 4.5Ghz/ 16 GB Gskill DDR3 1600/Nvidia GTX460 1GB// CH Yoke/Pedals/Throttle/TrackIR/Win7/ Fsx Deluxe SP1 & SP2 "Don't let fear or good judgment hold you back"
il88pp
About the "English Version" message: Read the FSInsider Support information here, in the article: "FSX SP2 - Bogus Error Message on Setup" http://www.microsoft.com/Products/Games/FSInsider/tips/Pages/default.aspx ---- Also, do not install in Program Files (x86). Not because of the issue with "English version" issue, but because it will make editing fsx files much harder. Disabeling UAC is a bad idea. That has to do with much more then user accounts. Like preventing changes to your important files (OS) and programs. Worth reading up on. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
ScatterbrainKid
I'm trying to install FSX on my new 8.1 Laptop. I'm a PC dummy and can't offer any techy advice, but for the record I installed my 7-year-old FSX Gold (3 disks including Acceleration, picture below) to my new laptop 8.1 last week, and it installed and plays just fine. It chose to install itself automatically into C:Program Files (x86) so I didn't argue. All I had to do was insert disks 2 and 3 when prompted, and it plays smooth as silk, maybe I just got lucky..:) PS- even the activation codes still worked fine http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/CMSF/fsx-gold-pack.jpg http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/CMSF/fsx-gold-disks.jpg
N66SF
OK. Everything is working now. Thanks abrussel, ib88pp and ScatterbrainKid for your advice. For the record, here's what worked for me, as follows: 1. Set up a new User Account (with Admin privileges). It is a Local User Account, with no Microsoft nonsense. 2. Logged out of original User Account and into new User Account. 3. Installed FSX (for use by all Users) to C:FSX and ran it once for confirmation. No problema. 4. Installed FSX SP1 and ran it once for confirmation. No problema. 5. Installed FSX SP2 and ran it once for confirmation. No problema. 6. Logged out of new User Account and into original User Account. 7. Ran FSX (with SP2 installed) on original User Account. No problema! Up and running on new Windows 8.1 PC! Thanks again!
