~Touring Norway in the Real Air Turbine Duke~ - Emergency landing!!

Recommended Posts

Welcome to my Norway tour series!

Today's flight hasn't gone quite to plan and I am pleased to have lived to tell the tale.

Our planned flight takes us over the Ranfjord, Hattfjelldal Airfield and Borgefjell-Byrkije National Park, which let me tell you is a BAD place to have an engine failure!

Thankfully we were carrying Jan's pocket-sized GPS so we headed to the nearest airfield we could find, which happened to be Grong Airfield Bjorgan. A tough approach even with a working aircraft!!

I'm relieved we made it down in one piece, after dancing around on the rudder pedals.. Turns out that in the Real Air config tool, setting the engine failure option to 'Extremely low' gives you a random failure every 4-5 hours!!

Luckily, Jan is a wizard with these Turbines and we were soon back up and running, heading South over Lierne National Park right on the border, then Blafjella-Skjaekerfjella National Park, Snasavatnet fjord and finally landing at Namsos airport.

It's been a dramatic days flying, time for a beer!!

Below is the story in pictures of both flights...

Will we make it down in one piece...?

Phew!! After Jan repaired the engine with a bit of 'gaffa' tape (he still didn't tell me how he fixed it so quickly) - We were right back on our way!

Thanks for viewing folks! Next flight? Heading back south in stormy weather over the Skarvan og Roltdalen, then land for fuel at Værnes Air Station.

Steve, we must be using the same maintenance personnel for our Dukes. I recently had a right engine failure shortly after takeoff and landed back at the departure airport. Time to look for another mechanic or get myself a virtual A&P license :)

Thanks Larry, this thing is still pretty powerful with even just the one engine running, but very tricky to land with all that yaw effect on one side.

Hey Joe, I think we need to name and shame this mechanic :D - Use Jan, what he can't do with gaffa tape isn't worth knowing! ;)

This can't be the same Jan as in the noble one, if it is, you better land at the nearest airport immediately, if not sooner. He is not a mechanic, he's a shoemaker and that's not a good thing, believe me I know from experience.

Beautiful shots Steve!! :) I hope you make it to your next destination safely. ;)

Thanks Annber, I would have to agree with you there! It's my favourite all time aircraft created for FS :D

hahaha Adam, so that's where I've been going wrong all these years!! No wonder my aircraft smell of shoe polish every time I strike them up! :D

You dancing on pedals is a much better sight than on a pole Steve!:rolleyes: you know I didn't agree to make an emergency landing, you only make emergency landings when all engines fail! And yes, I repaired the egine in no-time, being a expert on aircraft repair & maintenance! I didn't notice you made all these beautiful pics btw!:cool::eek:

...you only make emergency landings when all engines fail!

Especially if you can find a nice body of water to dive into!

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

Hey Phil thanks buddy, even in a sim you get the heart in mouth feeling, especially when you give yourself rules like I do. If I ever crash on a tour I have to start again or scrap the whole thing! :D

Regarding Jan, he was supposed to be in the back when we set off, I did wonder why he was grinning from ear to ear waving me goodbye as I turned onto the active ;)
