REX Has Transformed my Sky

Recommended Posts

I decided to pick up REX4+Soft Clouds on sale here at the FS Pilot Shop. After installing and configuring it, I set the weather to "crappy" and took a Delta B738 into KJAX.

As the gear comes out, it looks like this one might be down to minimums

I don't know how low rain clouds can look any more real than this

Sure enough, we broke out just above minimums

With the weather still set on soggy, I departed KDFW for KLAS in an American 757- this is what REX showed me when I got on top of the weather into the early morning sun

After an uneventful trip, the weather cleared as we descended into Las Vegas- never seen clouds like these in my sim

This truly is "as real as it gets."

Happy to say that the clouds look as good from the ground as they do from the air

If you haven't tried REX yet, this sale would be a great time to do so!

Indeed, this looks fantastic! Can you tell us what you´ve noticed about the fps? That is the reason i never tried REX in FSX....

I can imagine that you´re happy!!!! It looks very very good!

Firstly, thanks everybody for the kind comments. It just blows me away what is possible even on this "obsolete" FSX program.

What is the performance impact?

Well, I recently overclocked my i5-3570K from 3.4GHz to 4.0GHz (the lowest preset step in my mobo's overclocking utility), because after installing UTX-USA Version 2 (but before installing Rex4) I had gotten occasional stutters. The overclocking completely stopped any and all stutters, so obviously, it helped.

In my first and third pictures above, I had the FPS display turned on to try to get a feel for what kind of FPS reduction Rex was causing. Unfortunately, I didn't turn off my FPS limiter. Previously, with my limiter off, I was getting 50-60 FPS at altitude with the Rex clouds, decreasing to around 30 as I got closer to the ground.

In the first picture, it shows 29.1 FPS, and I averaged the limiter-constrained 30 FPS at 1,900 feet and higher with more-or-less featureless overcast clouds.

In the third picture, it shows 19.4 FPS, and I averaged 18-24 from 300 feet down to ground level with addon KJAX airport and more detailed Rex clouds. That's as low as I've seen it go. Before installing Rex, I saw a low of 22 FPS at the same KJAX addon airport.

Even at my addon KLAS with addon Las Vegas city scenery plus scattered Rex clouds, FPS was around 18-20 on the ground. Above 5,000 feet or so where the only visible detailed scenery is the spectacular Rex clouds, I got a solid 30 fps, which is what my limiter is set at.

So all in all, I would estimate that Rex reduced my overall average FPS by only about 4-6 FPS, because I was already getting a 5-FPS reduction as I descended close to the ground at my addon airports with UTX V2 installed. As long as I don't get stutters or jerky camera panning, I'm happy.
