Asking for a favor.

I'm hoping someone can fulfil my request. I'm running FSX on a laptop that isn't quite powerful enough to render highly detailed scenery and buildings and was wondering if someone that had a decent system would make a video doing a passover of my area. Here's what it would be.

Start a free daytime flight with a small engine plane and start in California at Reedley Mun (O32) and fly south until you reach Kings River Community College (CA13). Once there, turn left and head east for a couple minutes then fly to Fresno Yosemite Intl. (KFAT). You don't have to land at all, I'm just wondering if anything will show up aside from dirt and trees like on my game. Thank you if you do.

I don't know how to do that video stuff but see if these screenshots help, it's default FSX scenery with graphic settings around highish.

Just fly there yourself, put eveything up to max and you'll see what we see. It just won't animate very well. (I am presuming you mean you want to see what the default scenery looks like.)

Here ya go! I forgot I had my weather set on "crappy" but Fraps was already running so I just made a scud run out of it, staying low enough that you can still see the ground clearly except when I had to stick my nose into the cockpit to, you know, fly the airplane.

This was uploaded at full HD 1920x1080, so for best viewing click the YouTube icon, then the gear icon and set it to HD. All scenery is stock FSX with UTX on top of it.

You gotta hate those scud days!

Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.

Did anyone else shoot a touch and go at CA13?

Nice looking little campus there at K.R.C.C. but their airstrip is a bear! Halfway along it goes over the side of a hill and gives you about a 10* list. And if you're traveling the wrong way those trees are an issue too.

A guy really needs an Osprey if he's gonna fly a fixed wing in and out of there very often.

Don't have time for a video but I did that flight last night and got some screenshots. This is with FTX NCA which I just picked up during the sale (a steal at $25.80 USD). You're barely inside the southern coverage border (ie. Visalia is outside the coverage area) but you get this kind of scenery all the way north into Oregon with NCA.

EDIT: Oops, actually that $25.80 was AUD rather than USD, that would make it only $19.73 USD (at today's exchange rate)

I couldn't even find it the first time around so I came back from Fresno just for that reason. By then it was dark, I managed to find it and land but ran off the end of the runway into a housing complex in the process - oh well that's what slew is for! :)

Beautiful pictures Jim. This is why I run all the Orbx products. You just can't beat that kind of scenery. If you bought NCA don't forget to get their free NA airport pack. It has over 300 airports in it and off the top of my head I believe there are a few in the NCA area. :)

..I'm just wondering if anything will show up aside from dirt and trees like on my game.

Give the 'Scenery complexity' and 'Autogen density' sliders a whirl in Options>Settings>Display>Scenery.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-graphD_zpshtdfhvwb.jpg~original

Juggle them til you get what you want; for example in the first pic below both sliders are well towards the right and will give you buildings and trees at Kings River CC, plus a radio mast and water tower (cicled), but if you've only got a low-end computer it'll struggle to handle the workload-

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-graphA_zpsqea9yhfp.jpg~original

And in this view with the sliders more to the left, you lose the buildings and radio mast, but the frame rate will improve because your computer can handle it easier-

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-graphB_zps2mcniuvf.jpg~original

And finally with both sliders to the far left you lose everything including 3D trees and the water tower (but the flat bushes remain) and your computer workload will be easier still-

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-graphC_zpsnl9chr2l.jpg~original

Note: all the pics are standard FSX default scenery, no addons.

Also note the Kings River runway is a mess, it seems to be floating like a ghost a few feet above the ground, you can still land/takeoff from it but don't take it seriously.

It kind of looks like this in my game, but there's no water tower before the river. It does look nicer and Fresno is much more detailed. Thank you.

I never try landing at it but I did take off from it once. Just odd the way it floats there. I think the college runs a Cessna from there but I haven't heard anything about them using it the last couple years.

Thank you all. While I can't get FTX NCA like Jim has, just seeing it is more than I could ask for. And I used to live about a minute away from the college on the west side of it. Only saw their airstrip used once; I think it was a once yearly thing for graduation but I'm not sure.

Hey Lazor,

You've been there. Is the runway on the side of a hill? Just curious. I know they are sometimes in the RW. But surely not this bad.

No, but it is right next to the river. Look the college up on Google Maps and look for the 'I' shaped building and zoom in all the way, then zoom out two clicks. Near the bottom left corner, you'll see a plane parked in front of a building just in front of a compass painted on the ground; that's the hangar. The airstrip is that stretch that runs along right next to the baseball diamond and jogging track.

If I would've know it was going to be that detailed, I would've asked you to make a right turn at the river and fly west for about a minute. My house was just to the west of the river and I swear I saw houses and buildings in that area.
