Fsx online.

I have been flying fax for years now off line using the default atc. I used to play online back when the ingame online was active. So I was wondering what does everyone use these days to play online. Is there one program that everyone uses or is it all private servers. Also what do people use for atc online? Are there a bunch of addons I would need to download.

There are a number of different options for flying online, and many people willing to give info regarding this.

There are many public servers that are popular to fly on, displayed on different websites.

Many people also use VATSIM for online flying and atc at a professional level.

I don't fly online myself. Not any more. But if I wanted to take it up again I probably would start off that server.

I have not flown there yet, but from reading their forum they seem to have a relaxed attitude towards rules. As long as you don't disturb others you can pretty much fly as you like there it seems. Flightplans or membership of a virtual airline are not required. But are possible. You get points for total distance travelled.

No ATC enroute I believe.

ATC is automated at airports. They have a program running on the server that handels ATC. when you get to an airport you descnd to approach altitude yourself, you tune the tower frequency, and you ask clearence using a command. You then get talked in by the computer (similar to default ATC but better, computer voice, but keeps track of other planes too).

Before takeoff you have to ask for clearence too.

Occasionally some nice member goes online as ATC, and manages ATC at an airport for up to a few hours (!). You will then hear his/her voice talking you in!

I forgot to mention....many servers as il88pp states have the ability for people to act as Air Traffic Controllers..

Most sessions use TeamSpeak 3 for advanced communication and ATC....you will need to download that as part of your 'bunch of addons' if you want to fly with ATC.
