Are you trying to reformat so you can reinstall XP? If so, try this:

First, you want to use FDISK to remove the partition. Instructions on using FDISK were posted in this forum a little while back. I would gladly post them again, but I am not at a point where I can get the step by step instructions. Perhaps someone else can help there.

Next, make sure the XP CD is in the CD-ROM drive, then reboot your computer. XP should detect that the hard drive is not correctly set up, and will partition and format the drive, then install XP.

If this is not what you were trying to do, please let us know a little more, and someone should be able to help you out.

My goal is to delete win xp and install windows 98, it's seems so much easier to use to me.

    Thank you for the help.

I don't think windows 98 will run on an NTFS formatted drive. You would have to reformat it as FAT 16 or FAT 32.

I personally never format from windows, but use a dos freeware formatter available from most hard disk vendors. You could try downloading from the Western Digital site.

Having said all that, why would you want to go back to Windows 98?
I don't know what your computer specs are. You need at least 512 megs of ram to run FS2002 properly on windows XP, however I would say that XP runs more smoothly and eventually a lot of software will be obsolete on windows 98.

Real stability! Legacy support? Not everyone wants to run
the latest and greatest software. Taking DOS out of WinXP
did not improve system reliabilty - Taking DOS out of WinXP
was purely a move to make DOS-based software obsolete.

What could possibly be WinXP compatible and not Win98 compatible?

    Reply to #2 & 3:
Rservice is correct. Win98 will not run on an NTFS partition. Best bet, if you really want to go back to 98, you will need to FDISK the drive to remove all partitions, then boot with the Windows 98 CD in the CD drive, and let it recofigure the hard drive to what it needs.
