A Little Help Please - Aerosoft's F14x and Wing Sweep Settings on Take Off

Hi everyone....

I'm new to the F14x from Aerosoft, and have an issue.

I have Tac Pack enabled for the F14, and it seems that whenever I take off lately with it, I get no afterburner effects.

Another thing too, I am not sure if I have my Wing Sweep set up right. I seem to pull back on the stick, then I get a boom effect, and then I find myself up in orbit almost.

Am I scraping bottom and making a weapon explode? I don't get it...

Any help would be greatly appreciated in explanation of Angle of Attack, and the wing sweep and how it conforms? I know there is a way to set it to auto, but can't find it for some reason. Maybe someone can help on that too?

Thanks.

I don't know for sure about the Aerosoft bird, but make sure that the flaps are set to fully retracted (up), the wing sweep lever beside the throttles is fully forward, and the glass cover over it is closed. I also believe there is a switch forward of the throttles for "Auto" vs "Manual" wing sweep, and an Oversweep switch on the vertical pane just forward of that, that needs to be Off.

Best way to take off is keep the bird level, and let it float, or "balloon" off the runway on it's own, on take off. IE: keep it level, no need to rotate. Once off the runway, you can raise the nose a little bit. Once you're up to about 500 feet, check the flaps and other items i mentioned, retract the gear, and awaaaay you go!

The sweep lever, glass cover, autosweep switch and oversweep switch should be checked before you begin the Take off roll, btw. Set the flaps to the first setting for take off, then raise them once off the deck at about 800' I think.

I am going by the real world NATOPS procedures, by the way. I have no idea how close Aerosoft follows them.

As to AOA, you do realize it's the angle of the wing to the relative wind, NOT the angle of the nose above the horizon? The 14 will zoom pretty well in full AB, but that's prohibited for Take Off, as the failure of one engine, with the other still in AB will cause the bird to have such a high yaw rate it becomes uncontrollable. In MRT there is enough rudder authority to maintain cobntrol. Anyway, you have an AOA indicator beside the HUD, the yellow circle in the center indicates "on speed" for the current weight, gear configuration, flaps, etc. The lower red arrow is slow, the upper green arrow if too fast. Used for landing/carrier recovery as a corsscheck for the HUD's alpha and "E symbol" that should be showing beside the velocity vector with the gear down, as well as the airspeed display. Once the gear is up, the hud symbology clears, other than the Velocity vector, and alpha displays. If the velocity vector (VV) goes and stays below the horizon, you are descending, and/or slow, with a high AOA.

And the higher your AOA, the nearer the stall. You can google AOA on the net and get some wonderfull graphicals on the flow of the relative wind over the wing, and how it changes as the AOA increases. NOT the angle above the horizon, the angle to the wind created by the airplane moving through the air. You can have a very high AOA at a level horizon angle.

Sorry, ask me how the time, I'll tell you how to build a clock...

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

Thanks for the info Pat - I really appreciate it. I'll have some time later tonight to practice Touch and go's with the ol' girl so we'll see how it is with your advice.

Merry Christmas! :)

Thanks Pat, it's all set. Got it off the ground tonight.

Don't know what I was doing wrong, but it's working properly at least. :).
