New to FSX

Recommended Posts

hi all, my name is Matt from Nottingham UK, I am 42 and I have just bought fsx, I also own x plane x.

I had a copy of fsx about 2 years ago and my wife has misplaced it (well I blame her anyway)

I am now waiting for my new copy to arrive in the post so my questions are these if you can help I would greatly appreciate it.

1, I am going into this all out so I am looking at the Saitek yoke, with throttle quadrant, auto pilot, radio and switch panel and also pedals to start with. Is this a good idea do you think?

2, What add ons can you guys suggest/reccommend to me for more scenery, comms with atc etc, better graphically airports, better traffic?

3, I have heard of traffic 360 and also ultimate traffic 2. which if any do you guys recommend?

4, also been looking at the track ir5 pro. any opinions on this please?

5, I would like to communicate with the ground on take off and approach and anything else. is this possible?

my pc specs are these.

windows 7 home premium 64bit, intel core i7 cpu 970 @3.20 ghz, 12gb ram, nvidea GeForce gtx680.

do you think my pc is good enough to run high graphics, set up etc?

If not what do you guys suggest please?

as I said I really want to get into this in a big way so as much help and advice on add ons or any other aspects you think I need would be massively appreciated. thanks in advance guys

You will need to overclock to run FSX well. Ideally 4.5 GHz which means you will need an aftermarket cooler.

For scenery addons - I would get the Horizon UK photoscenery and some airports from UK2000. UK2000 do have a few cut down free versions and demos you can try first, but you will have to pay for the full versions.

ORBX England is worth considering, but personally, I prefer photoscenery. I also bought the Real VFR photoscenery, but the Horizon is much better in my opinion.

I have the Saitel yoke, rudder and throttle quadrant. I've been pretty happy with them but they are not as smooth as I would like. I don't think there is a lot to choose between Saitek and CH, but most people I know use the Saitek.

I didn't get track IR in the end as I thought it a bit too expensive after buying scenery, yoke, rudder etc.

Buy NO addons or new yoke etc til after you've at least got FSX up and running straight out of the box for a while!

Remember, straight FSX is already like a beautiful woman, and she might take it as an insult and throw a tantrum if you keep trying to tart her up.

Look around and you'll see a lot of people have problems after adding something, it's like russian roulette, sometimes you'll get away with it and sometimes not..:)

I bought the Saitek Yoke not long time ago and ended up taking all default springs and dings out of it and replacing with rubberbands. The yoke simply had such a strong selfcentering that I couldnt fly with it. Imagine driving your car in busy hours with a stearing wheel that sticks in the center and takes a force to get out of that center making you overstear strongly, going back to center, stick and then overstear the other way. The yoke is like that x2 (elevator and aileron axes)

Pedals are almost a must if you are serious, but many real planes use a stick. I prefer the Yoke, but my.... why did they make that way.

Hi OrangeVanMan,

Welcome to the world of FSX!

For air traffic control (point 5) I would recommend VOXATC for offline flying or VATSIM for online flying.

For scenery, blueskyscenery offers freeware photscenery of many US states.

As far as your PC specs, you should be able to run FSX fine, keep in mind its a balance with the settings to not overtax your system.

I also use a saitek yoke and did the rubber band mod to remove the center detent.

For now, get your FSX installed, tweaked for your system specs and running smoothly, then start to add add-ons.

Happy Flying!

So by online flying i mean multiplayer, or flying with other real people via some type of server. Like VATSIM or FSHOST. FSX has a multiplayer function built into it, but that was shutdown some time back. Anyway, offline flying is "singleplayer" which is the default if you were to just start a FSX flight. When offline the default ATC isnt that good, VOXATC replaces it with voice recognition ATC.

The rubberband trick will void your warranty but heres some details -

Well your certainly welcome to ask here, this is a community full of "simmers". I use TS from time to time, mostly with the VA i fly with though. (VA is a virtual airline). You're also welcome to message me directly here on flightsim.com.

The install process varys from aircraft to scenery. But for the most part if its a payware it will come with an installer that will do it for you. Freeware gets a little tricky but its just a matter of copying some folders. We can go into detail here, but im sure there are also plenty of topics on that already on this forum.

I currently fly for Buffalo Airways Virtual - http://buffaloairwaysvirtual.com

What can I say, I like the old piston pounders, cold weather, and short runways.

You'll find that just about every real world airline has a VA.

do any of you guys use teamspeak or any kind of comms so I can talk to some of you about mods/add ons and how to install them..

It can get tricky like Pyro said and I doubt if you can do it with a microphone, you can't beat a step-by-step 'How to' illustrated post.

If you want to add new planes I can post a 'How to' guide in this thread if you want me to?

I'm not an expert on adding weather and scenery, but this is how I add aircraft-

ADDON AIRCRAFT DOWNLOAD TUTORIAL

This is a freeware Boeing 777

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/ExIS/DLJ.jpg

Okay this is how I did it, the same way I've been doing it for years with FS2004 and FSX-

1- download the zip file to Desktop

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/ExIS/dlA.jpg

2- Unzip it-

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/ExIS/DLB.jpg

3- The unzipped yellow folder will now appear somewhere on desktop-

4- Click it to examine its contents, note the name of the plane is in its own subfolder-

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/ExIS/DLD.jpg

5- Click the subfolder and you'll see the essential six things every aircraft in FSX must have, namely Model/Panel/Sound/Texture/aircraft file/cfg file

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/ExIS/DLE.jpg

6- Go back and Copy the plane subfolder-

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/ExIS/DLf.jpg

7- and Paste it into the FSX 'Airplanes' folder-

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/ExIS/DLg.jpg

8-and bingo! it should appear in the games list of aircraft..:)

Hi,

If you havn't already installed it by now I would recommend reading the FSX bible here,

as the way you install FSX at the beginning can prevent problems later on when

installing the FSX service packs.

Either way it makes interesting reading (if a little long !)

Good luck
