Thread: Telluride, CO

  1. Default Telluride, CO

I flew out of Telluride this weekend in the Mooney B. I had to go west a bit for altitude, but soon turned east and headed over Imogene Pass. I did a short side trip to Ouray, CO, then went south, landing at Durango. Nice scenery in this part of the state. It's high, gold country, though I didn't notice any miners. Anyway, on my approach at Durango, I rediscovered a little thing called ground effect. The Mooney likes to float down the runway without setting her wheels down any too soon. It was an attention getter there for a few moments. Where's that speed brake button again, dang it?

    What a rush!

I made the same flight yesterday afternoon (Sunday) in a Baron (I am assuming your flight out of Telluride was simulation and not real) did you use the default scenery? I have spent a lot of time in that part of Colorado and the default FS2002 scenery does not look like what I am use to seeing. Does anyone know of a any good add-on scenery for Colorado?

FSGenesis Rocky Mountain scenery looks pretty good. I've only flight simulated over this area in a plane, but I've spent some time there in reality. Lots of fun 4-wheeling to be had in the area. Imogene Pass is sweet, especially when there's been some snow over 12,000 ft. the night before. But the real kick is coming down Blackbear Pass. That's as scary as I've ever seen it from inside my Pathfinder.

I also have done a lot of 4-wheeling there. My favorit is taking Engineer Pass from Ouray to Lake City. Some of the most beautiful scenery in the world in my opinion. I'll check out FSGenesis.

    Hi vstall,

Here are 3 screenshots created using my 30m mesh for the Telluride area (CD4). High-res mesh makes quite a difference.

CD4 extends from the Mexican border north to the Canadian border; It includes most of Colorado, New Mexico and Montana, and about half of the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas and West Texas - a lot of beautiful country (W101 to W109 degrees).

Looks good, what effect dose it have on frame-rates?

I also fly in and out of KTEX quite a bit. Its a fun airport but the mesh is all wrong in FS. Try this file at Avsim.com: "tex30m10.zip". It is very accurate mesh of the area. I spend lots of time climbing, skiing, and four wheeling up there and it is pretty right on. I also updated the airport with Lago Scenery Enhancer if you have the program and want the file. Not sure if my updates are accurate however since I have not been to the airport itself for real. There also is a fun airstrip just north of Durango (forget the name) in a valley which is fun to fly out of. I drive past it all the time and see lots of gliders and small aircraft coming and going. Nice and tight to get in and out of and great to connect to KTEX.

I have been to the small airport ( actually a field) just north of Durango. I was driving by it while on vacation two years ago when I say a glider landing. I pulled into the parking lot saw a sign about glider rides, signed up and off we went. First time and only time I have ever been in a glider it was great experience. I would recomend it to anyone.

    Hi John,

The effect of 30m mesh on FPS is not bad. It is hard to compare rates on different systems, but I usually fly VFR with the setting locked at 13 or 14 FPS with no problems. I am running a 1.3 PIV at 1600x1200x32 full screen with TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21, which improves the detail but does affect FPS.

You may want to try some of the files I have available for downloading from my site to test your system.

    Cheers,

    Steve

I LOVE Telluride! Best airport as well as the best ski resort, in my opinion.
