Default FPS problem

Allright, I'm at the end of my rope. With my AMD K3-450 I was getting decent framerates (around 15) and I was overall very happy with FS2002. I finally was able to get a new laptop and I noticed a peculiar problem NOT present in my 450. For the default 747 under full cockpit view, my fps is 12. Instrument view, 18. Full view 30. Every other view is at 30, my max. The default 737 is better, but I do have some airplanes that get 8 under full cockpit view. My laptop is an HP xt345, 2.0 ghz, 256M DDR RAM, 30 GB HD, and ATI Mobility M6 video with 32MB.

I have tried everywhere to find a similar problem with no answer!

What operating system are you using? If using Windows XP, you need at least 512 megs of ram

It just sounds a little odd because my 450 is also Xp pro with 256 MB

I too am running a AMD K6-III 450mhz system but with 384 MB RAM and still get about the same FR as you. I am using an ATI All in Wonder 128 with 32MB video RAM AGP card. My last card was an AIW Pro with only 8MB video RAM. My frame rates didn't change much but things flew some what smoother. As I've read FS2002 is mainly a processor hog more so than video resources. But I also noticed that the plane you pick can afect your rates too. And as always, compare in the same scenery location & use same settings. But you already knew that.

I believe your problem is with the ATI Mobility M6/32MB. In fact, it may be using some of your system RAM vice having it own RAM. You just can't put all the bells and whistles in a laptop due to its size unless you want to lug around a 45lb box.

Well, idid some additinal checking on my problem and it just gets weirder. With the default Bell under cockpiy view I get 1o fps. With virtual view I get 25 fps easy. But if I pan around towards the very top, they drop back down. Apparently, certain type of textures affect the fps. With a cessna, looking out the sides fps drops down to 10, but in all other views is 25 easy.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-17-02 AT 03:59AM (EDT)[p]But the fps will ALWAYS vary as you pan around, see 2d or 3d views, open or close panels or gauges. I don't see what the problem is..? You have a better system, and the potential for higher frame rates is there, so the highest achievable is higher than before...

If you want to lock the frames then do it, that's what the FPS slider is for, then you 'll see less variation. Try 16fps.

Man, I just don't know. See, I should not have the same performance upgrading from an AMD 450, that's all. I've been checking on any settings to see why such a large drop-off in fps. Honestly, the only real difference is the video card. I mean I get great performance from some airplanes under any view setting, except when clouds are present. So my issue is for example what is the big difference between the 747 and 777. The look the same from a software standpoint. BTW, I made the display settings for both computers the same and I still have a problem.

Whn you change one computer for another, you exchange one set of problems for another.

    Que sera.
