    Default Speedbrake question

Hey everyone! When are speedbrakes normally used in jets? Are they deployed just before landing or after? Thanks in advance

    Also from the manual -

If you need to descend rapidly and need to control your airspeed, you can use them in flight. Or on a full configured approach, they are often deployed upon touchdown to "spoil" lift and help slow the plane. Shift + / will set them for auto deploy.

    Earl,

Depending on the airplane, the increase in descent rate - even with full deployment of the spoilers – can be minimal.

The devices “spoil” life, causing an increase in drag. Therefore you can descend at a similar indicated airspeed, but at a somewhat greater rate. Or, their use can aid in a speed reduction, while maintaining a similar rate of descent. Also, the speedbrakes are more beneficial at a higher indicated speed than slower.

Lastly, the speedbrakes can very helpful during landing roll. The downward pressure created will place all of the aircraft weight on the wheels, allowing the tires and brakes to aid in deceleration; on contaminated runways, friction may be lost otherwise.

Ps. The spoilers in MSFS are far more effective than on most real jets.
