Default GPWS (Ground Proximity Warning System)

I just was wondering if anyone knows if Flight Simulator 2002 includes some sort of GPWS system. I don't think it does and I've been searching for a GPWS addon on the web, but I just cannot find one for FS2002.

Yesterday I was making an approach at night to a South American airport and while I was on my last approach I crashed against a mountain in the Andes! (dear God!) and since it was pitch black I didn't see it. Had my plane been equiped with with a GPWS alarm system, I would've been warned of the mountain ahead of me and avoided it. That's why I'm looking for a GPWS, cuz pilots in real life depend on this kind of system to avoid hitting mountains and I think flight simmers need one too.

Does anyone know where to find a GPWS system compatible with FS2002?

    Any help is much appreciated.

A few add-on panels come with GPWS. I can't think of them off the top of my head, but I have a particularly nice 737NG panel, A320 panel, & FS98 MD-11 panel with GPWS as a feature.
What I'm thinking of might not even be GPWS. It says "Pull up, Terrain" when you get low, & calls out altitude from 500ft to 0ft.

    Correct.

Also, there's a radar altimeter available. Not sure though if either of the systems would work in case you are approaching a steep terrain /a wall/mountain ridge/. Radar alt will not for sure, since it measures the alt directly below the plane.

I hope Microsoft puts this on the 2004 list!

At the moment we are limited to a radar altitude gauge in the Cessna Caravan.

Fortunately there are plenty of radar gauges around- the most useful are probably the digital readouts next to the AI as they are directly in line of your sight, or even the strip gauges.

One of the best GPWS is in Bill Grabowski's brilliant panel. Although they are reading the ground below you his does have a terrain closure rate which measures how fast the radar altitude decreases. It is also in Espen Oijordsbakken's Fokker 50- useful but don't count on it saving you from the Andes! What you really need is Forward and Sideways Looking Radar as in combat aircraft then you can have full terrain avoidance or terrain following. I doubt whether any of these are around although I haven't looked at many combat machines.

Of course real-life pilots shouldn't depend on these because their flight path should not put them in contact with mountains although a very small error can result in something like the terrible Air NZ accident at Mt Erebus.

    Good luck,

    Michael.

Indeed? That's something. Is there an accident report somewhere on the Web? Would really like to take a look.

"Bill Grabowski's excellent panel".....What is this a panel for and where can I get it?

    Thanks-

Bill Grabowski's package includes panel and aircraft (ERJ). You can download it from this site- erj grab.zip You need the 2002 patch which from memory is on the fsnordic site.
