Thread: Default Float Plane;

  1. Default Default Float Plane;

    I took the amphibian out last night for the first time. Talk about powerful; it was like holding a tiger by the tail! I admit it was actually intimidating, thinking about the impending departure. Bravely I ventured out, and even tried some water landings and take offs at a nearby lake. I noticed a few things while operating her, however. Just sitting on the tie down pad, with the engine idling, there was still enough tractor force to pull me along. I had to constantly apply toe breaks to hold her. I assume this can be controlled by prop pitch? Anyway, I realised I needed to do some homework before I'd be able fly this bird with any sort of competence. Is there a good place to learn to fly this beastie, and deal with all her little quirks?

    I think I'm going to like the Caravan once I get her saddle broke. She may become MY default plane. ;-)

    Hello vstall,
    For improved flight characteristics you may want to try Steve Smalls airfile. Look for FSD_C208_v2.0.zip either here or at www.fsd-international.com
    To slow the C-208 on the water you might try to toggle between F1 and F2 keys. This will either bring the engine to idle thrust (F1) or reverse (F2).
    Hope this helps.

    Thanks, 72737. I'll also look at the online destruction manual when I get home tonight.

    As a long-time fan of C-208 Amphibian, I'd love to reply :)

    If you keep mixture low-idle (or prop, though I don't do that)while taxiing, you will have to set more power to taxi. Also, even at full mixture/prop, a pure zero throttle setting (F1) will keep you stopped (but add one F3 of throttle, and it will start moving). So I suggest you recalibrate your throttle wheel, maybe leaving a bit of slack on the bottom end, and adjusting dead zone.

    And as of homework, I've found this bird way too easy... I'm going to check out that new model mentioned above :)

    Cheers -- Den

    I can't seem to find any of the improved airfiles for the default planes at the FSD site. Can someone email them to me. My email address is earl_so@hotmail.com Thanks in advance.

    Anyone to email it to the two of us? I'd be extremely grateful :)
