I've always thought that the AA paint scheme defined pretty for the Gooney. BTW, if you haven't already, read Ernest K. Gann's Fate Is The Hunter, an excellent look at the early days of airlines with DC2s and DC-3, along with the opening up of the Transatlantic Routes during WW II and transition to other aircraft. Very well written, and he puts you in the cockpit throughout most of the book. Gann flew for AA, BTW.
