Thread: Does Anyone Else Remember When...

Default Does Anyone Else Remember When...

I was downloading some files today, and noticed how the size of one was 40+ MB, for a freeware aircraft.

I remember downloading aircraft for my first version of FS some 15+ years ago, I'd get them from school, fit several on a 3.5" floppy disk, and bring them home. I guess times have changed!

I'll beat that! I used to work on a billing and accounting system back in 1976 that had 1 1/2 K of data memory, 4K of program memory and an optional 12K of more program memory! WOW! Each card was 1/2 K of core memory...little iron donuts with a wire passing through it with either +5volts or 0 volts for your high or low. This was not really a computer because it has sequential access not random.

Sorry, no airplane on this post!

I remember when my PC had a 42 mb hard drive and I had to create boot disks for each game to actually run...

Should I load the mouse or the soundcard? Ah hell, I'll just use the keyboard so I can actually listen to the rad 16-bit music!

The TRS-80 Model I that I bought in 1978 had a cassette tape drive for storage and (I forget, either 16K or 32K of RAM), plus 12K of ROM (included Basic). A year or two later I bought the expansion interface, filling out the memory to a full 48K, along with a 5¼" floppy disk that held 90K, but was double sided, so that I could turn it over and have 180K total -- I was in hog heaven. And I worked on (among other things) a DEC computer that had a removable 1 MB hard drive.

I remember the days back around the turn of the century when I envied all those who had computers that they could download files bigger than 1 meg. I had really poor dialup internet and would spend hours downloading a file that takes less than a minute now. Things have really changed.

I paid $895 for a 10MB hard drive in 1988, and was happy to get such a deal.

Today between my FS computer, my 'work' computer, my wife's computer, our two laptops and our NAS - we have about 12TB of hard drive space - probably more than existed in the entire world back when we both took our first computer classes.

Punching cards was so much fun.

One thing I remember...comparatively recently...counting (and mis-counting) down the 45 floppy disks for my MS Office 97 install. It was, I believe, also available in the CD-ROM, but I thought that was too high-tech for me..

I was wondering how many floppies would I need for my ORBX Pacific Northwest!
