Thread: Altitude problems

  1. Default Altitude problems

I have a problem with altitude when im going long international flights or flights that require me to fly over 27000ft.

When i take off and climb to over 27000ft my plane begins to slow down and eventually stall. But if i fly any where between 0ft and 27000 ft plane flies okay but go over that it slows down and falls out the sky

Anyone know how to fix this problem

What is your service celling of your airplane? When it is under 27000 feet you had to fly under 27000

Check to be sure you have the pitot heat turned on. Icing of the probes and loss of speed data occurs in FS at altitudes like you describe in your post.

That messes with the autothrottle and autopilot ability to fly the plane.

BTW - we can give you better answers if you include things like telling us exactly which plane you are flying, which route you are flying, what are your system specs.

I tend to use 747, 757, 777, 787, a330, a340, a380 for long hauls, most of those can cruise over 30000ft upto 42000ft, dnt really mind cruising under 27,000ft for Domestics, e.g southwest, jetblue, etc

    747 - Worldwide
    757 - Europe to USA

if your plane has real world flight dynamics you probably need to burn off some fuel if you are at or near mtow. when i fly to the philippines from KSFO on a 747 they climb to FL19 or 21, burn fuel, and then climb to cruise altitude from there. how much fuel has to be burned, can't tell you that. i think your VSI needs to be a lower value also when up at the higher flight levels if you are heavy.

p.s. no need to call me Capt folks, Capt Flappers is just a name my wife teases me with because of my flight sim obsession.

    From which developers.

An A320 from one developer can be very different than the aircraft from another developer.

Bernie has a very valid point about weight and step climbs. It is a subject which anyone wanting to do long flights in big aircraft needs to study and learn.

I think the solution is fairly easy: decrease the vertical speed!
Above 25000 ft you shouldnt use vertical speeds higher than 1000 ft/second.

You ASI generally show IAS or TAS. If you are nearing your service ceiling the IAS will keep on decreasing. But if you have set the ASI to show TAS then it will keep on increasing. I think you were just nearing the service ceiling. And there is also a subscale setting for altimeter in baro. In international airspace you set it to 1013 and local flying it is the sea level pressure.

I personally don't think you should attempt anything near 1000 ft./second with anything less than an Atlas V strapped to your backside, but that's just me
