Question How Much AI is to much ?

In line with extra memory , more power, and 64bit Win 7 (after migrating from XP with 1.5 meg memory) ...I think I may have OD'd on my AI planes.

I downloaded every single plane from the WOAI site and there are virtually thousands of them.
So far I have just installed to the specific area I usually fly in (I write my own flight plans) and there are 648 planes in my hanger, from the humble Piper all the way to the A380.

My frame rates are locked at 32 and it stays there 95% of the time, just some decrease when I hit fluffy 3D clouds to about 25fps.

So I don't have a performance problem as such.

Just trying to get some idea of how many planes my fellow simmers have in their hanger.

    Have I overdone it

Haha! I think you'll be fine.

I've also downloaded everything from WOAI, historic airliner AIs and some randoms AIs that my friends created for me.

Based on my laptop specs below, I get pretty good frame rates.
    Acer Aspire 4920G
Windows Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002)
    Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7300 (2.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, 4MB L2 cache)
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 XT HyperMemory, 3GB DDR2 RAM

    I have 310 different aircraft installed..including flyable.

Number of different textures (including flyable) 3,546

Number of a/c used in flightplans 3,539

    Number of AI flights 24,341

    Number of AI Legs 576,092

    FS9 still working a treat.

Basically there's not much of a problem in aircraft so long as you have enough HDD space I also have hundreds of aircraft for FS; as for AI I use 5 programs GA-Traffic, WOAI, Mytraffic, Ultimate Traffic & Helitraffic which really populate my airspace with AI's spanning GenAv, Military, Commercial, Helicopters & Ultralights excluding my custom AI's yet still running 30+fps I regulate them depending on the airports; the only problem is having too much layers on your FlightSim which as they say you can only add 331 layers it is known as the Scenery Layering Bug.

I've never heard of this. I have nearly 500 layers active and perhaps another 200 inactive and everything works well.

There was discussion some time ago, that FS9 loads 331 layers at one time, no more.
Layers tagged "Required" are given preference.
Whether you ever notice that limitation is debatable, you'd have to have an awful lot of scenery active within one horizon.

As to the OP question, the answer is: "There is no such thing".
You can never have too much AI.

Well typically the remaining 200 are inactive unless you use them like Wing_Z said FS9 will only load 331 at a time the only thing that would trigger the said bug is for example you flew from Point A to Point B let say about 17,000km flight using Boeing 777LR that's a really long route & on the way you filled the route will dozens of scenery add-ons from Point A to Point B your sim will load all those 331 layers that's included in the flight but when you hit the 332nd layer just say 3/4 along the route the remaining layers will not be loaded by the sim itself which is practically almost impossible to trigger unless you really like an extremely long haul flight with dozens of eye candies along the way

As far as the OP's question regarding overloading the sim with AI, I think it's pretty much impossible. No matter how many AI aircraft you have installed, in any given area the local airports are going to have a finite number of parking slots and only so many enroute aircraft are going to be present in a given chunk of airspace. So even if you had thousands of AI flightplans active all over the world you might only have dozens of AI in your vicinity.
