Thread: Importing WhisperPlacer thumbnails into ADE - How is this done?

Default Importing WhisperPlacer thumbnails into ADE - How is this done?

Hello. I am just getting started with scenery design and all the lovely eccentricities that go along with it. So bare with me...

I like the feel use of ADE, but it seems a bunch of the thumbnails are missing. I downloaded the WhisperPlacer thumbnail pack, and the images and hex (filename between the '{ }') names seem to match those in ADE, except they're in the wrong format, and with the wrong. I can rename each file to match the format of ADE, and this works. For example:

ADE is missing the thumbnail for Barn 2, in the autogen.bgl. Hence:
(after copying 'autogen' folder from WhisperPlacer to ADE 'thumbs' folder)
    - Change the name/format of '{0eff56....}.thumb.gif' to '{0eff56....}.jpg'
    - Magically the Barn 2 now has an associated tumbnail!

All well and good, but is there a way to batch change these? Or possibly a different way of going about it?

    Thanks for any help! Brian.

    Hi Brian,

Mass importation of thumbnails is a problem Scruffy Duck is working on for the next iteration of ADE. Meanwhile try bigthumb.zip in the Flightsim file library. I think it will contain all the autogen files you are missing and a lot more. Otherwise find a sparse airport in FSX ( I use L72 ) and start planting static objects one by one next to the runway and hand capture each thumbnail. (I started with hangars first and then a few objects like gas tanks and gas pumps) It is tedious but will work to get you started.

    Hope this helps.

The Big Thumbnail pack as mentioned above contains thumbnails for all FSX stock objects. Also I am currently working on improving the function in ADE for importing thumbnails from other tools and locations. In the meantime all that is needed is for a thumbnail to contain the GUID (which whisplacer thumbs have in the name) and change the extension to jpg. A bulk file renamer would do that. However I think you will find that the Big Thumbnail pack contains everything you might need for FSX stock objects.

Thanks, Jon. I was able to rename all the thumbnail/images with GUID, using XnConvert. A little trial and error, but fairly painless. So stock FSX objects, we're all good with.

Now, what to do with the rest...

I am working on it (between cleaning out the chickens and chasing the sheep out of the garden!)
