Ever run a utility that needs to write to a file and can't because it doesn't have permission because Windows 7 has the Program Files folder locked down tighter that Ft. Knox?

Because spending the extra 10 seconds clicking on the Custom Install box and typing in C:\FSX saves so many headaches later on that I continue to push that until there is not a single Vista/Win 7 user on the planet.

Added 100's of repaints and addons and modified many panels as well as views. The only reason I can think of to leave UAC on is if you have someone else with access to your computer and don't trust them. Otherwise UAC has 0 use as anyone using XP or earlier can attest, since it didnt exist back then.

I have had FSX (and previously XP) installed to its default location with UAC off since day 1 with absolutly 0 issues, and I dont have to remember which path to point an addon to or an SP, they just install where they should.

However, to each his own.

Was that with UAC on? I use FSCopilot and have installed it many times without issue, but with UAC off and running as Admin

Why should anyone turn off a level of protection in Win 7 just to gain access? Also, please note that this is not a UAC message. You do all this magic, but the average person just wants to install stuff and fly without needing a computer science degree.

Yes I know it was FSinn, I have seen the message before, and am not sure what causes it, but usually a new install fixes it. I have it on both my Win7 and XP machines and it does it once in a while.

As far as "turn off a level of protection in Win 7 just to gain access", prior to Vista it wasnt even an option, it didnt exist. Some genius at MS decided we needed to be protected from ourselves I guess. But again, unless someone else has access to your computer, why would you be so worried that you need UAC enabled?

And I am one of those who "just wants to install stuff and fly without needing a computer science degree", and installing to a default location has never, ever, given me problems, so again, to each his own I guess.

IMHO it depends on each persons preferences, and level of ability. Installing to the afore mentioned folder will solve future issues for many. I turned off UAC not because of FSX but because of the constant nags one gets with OS from Vista onwards. You know the ones... are you sure? Are you really really sure? And on it goes... But then, the computer is only used by me.

With FSInn I do confess to installing it to C:\FSInn and also setting run as administrator for the exe.

I have to agree with JSkorna that C:\... Or another drive completely is the best option and what I will do on the next re-install, whenever that may be!

Whichever way you choose, you have to remember to do something.

After saying all the above, the only issue I have had with FSX running on Win7 is that after closing it down, I sometimes get a windows error message telling me that FSX has stopped responding. I'm unclear if this is to do with FSX or one of the add on's or because it's in the Programme Files folder. After spending many hours loading all my stuff, in what I considered to be the right order, and doing a restart after each install, I just don't have the energy to bother completely reinstalling it all in C:\FSX or changing the folder path etc. in case I unscrew anything.

Quite agree, the way I use my computer(s), UAC is just a nuisance and I disable it immediately I re-install Windows 7 on any of them, and the way I have my various SSDs arranged I have to have FSX installed out of the C:\ drive anyway.

Never caused any problems but not going to get into arguments about it, each to his own, as previously said.

Leave UAC on, install prior to Vista/Win7 release software (software susceptible to the bug) outside the \Program Files folder on Vista and Windows 7. Its simple, its safe(r) and you keep the UAC protection on, which is what it should be in todays world of zero-day exploits..
