Thread: Is it just me - or are some aircraft off scale?

    Default Is it just me - or are some aircraft off scale?

    I have a rather nice add-on Grumman Gulfstream V that I have since moved to my "unused aircraft" folder because it is way out of scale. Although it is a beautiful aircraft in most aspects from the spot plane view it is about the same relative size as a Boeing 727/737 in relation to the taxiways, runways and other aircraft.

    Is this some gaffe on the part of the aircraft designer or are there many other add-ons with the same problem?

    Is there a way to 're-scale' the aircraft to make it more esthetically pleasing or is its size determined by the .mdl so I'm stuck with it as is?

    I recall being able to scale aircraft in CFS rather simply (I imported many FS98 aircraft into CFS ...it was interesting to shoot down 747s with a well armed Lear), but have forgotten how, and not even sure if the procedure would work in FS9.

    But there does seem to be an issue; I never knew an ME-262 was so large:

    OMG! It's a good thing that the Messerschmitt wasn't really that big or we'd all still be driving VW Beetles. There definitely is an issue with scale in some add-ons as I thought.

    The incorrect scaling is entirely due to the error(s) of the aircraft creator. There is no way that I'm aware of re-scaling. The .mdl file has to be recreated from scratch, so far as I know, and I began creating FS airplanes about 1990. If anyone knows otherwise, I would be very interested in learning how to do it.

    Odd thing about those screenshots is I don't know whether the default Lear is too small or that payware 262 is too large.

    Regarding CFS, a quick search divulged the utility "Scale-up" at simviation. From memory, CFS used a different default scale from FS98 so aircraft imported from the latter were too small; this utility hacked the mdl using a scale factor you designated (don't recall if you could scale down). It worked well most of the time; occasionally refusing to run on some files, and, rarely, corrupting the file.

    The following is an excerpt from the aircraft.cfg for the Gulfstream V:

    [General]
    atc_type=GULFSTREAM
    atc_model=VC10
    editable=1
    performance=Cruise Speed \n477 kts 550 mph 885 km\/h\n\nEngines \nCFM56-3C1\n\nMaximum Range \n2,059 nm 2,370 mi 3,810 km\n\nService Ceiling \n36, 089 ft 11,000 m\n\nFuel Capacity \n5,311 U.S. gal 20,104 L\n\nEmpty Weight-Standard \n76,180 lb 34,550 kg\n\nMaximum Gross Weight\n150,000 lb 68,039 kg\n\nLength \n120 ft 36.45 m\n\nWingspan \n94 ft, 9 in 25.9 m\n\nHeight \n36.5 ft 11.13 m\n\nSeating \nSeats 147 to 168\n\nCargo Capacity \n1,373 ft3 38.93 m3\n\n

    Paying particular attention to the parts I have highlighted in red........ while the wingspan is amost correct - according to the figures I got from Wikipedia it is 93ft. 5in., take a look at the seating capacity. It's a wonder that the 737 sold as well as it did ROFLMAO, the airlines should have all bought Gulfstream Vs, they missed the boat on that one.

    FWIW, according to Wikipedia

    G-V length = 96' 5"
    B737 length = 94-138"

    G-V wingspan = 93' 4"
    B737 wingspan = 94' 9" for the 300-500

    So a G-V is about the same footprint as the early 737s and some of the new short body 737s.

    On the G-V Wiki page it even lists the BBJ under "Aircraft of comparable role, configuration and era"

    So maybe it's not that far off.

    Wow, I knew the G-V was large as bizjets go but I'd have never guessed it was the same size as a 737. I'm sure I would have reacted the same way as the OP if I'd seen it parked next to an ai 737.
