Thread: repainting biplane wings

  1. Default repainting biplane wings

    hi, fellow simmers,

I can't find any reference in the contributions to this painter's dept., so here is what's worrying me (or rather driving me nuts). I'm relatively new to repainting (altho simming since the olden days of FS4); things work out quite nicely, and Photoshop is an adorably rich tool.
BUT - and here's what keeps puzzling me - I got stuck somehow when trying to repaint the wings of a BIPLANE, in this case Oliver Fischer's great Buecker 131 Jungmann. The problem is that there is no repaint template available, and unfortunately Leen de Jager's buecker-jungmeister_repaintkit.zip does not offer any help, altho Leen's own Jungmann painting exhibits exactly the way of putting ID's or any other markings on the wings I myself am after: markings just on ONE upper wing's top and on just ONE lower wing's bottom (NB: there comes a total of EIGHT half-wings with a biplane). So without a template available I have to go into the plane's textures (here: bmp's), convert what I need with DTXBmp, do my repainting in Photoshop, save my work as bgl and finally add an alpha again in DTXBmp.
Still, there are no layers except those I myself have put on top of a given background. So the results remain depressing: I always get BOTH upper wings' top-sides and BOTH lower wing's undersides repainted (one normal, the other mirrored and upside down).
Why is this so? What is going wrong in my logical thinking? How can I avoid the placement of markings in undesired places?
Thanks a lot for any help and/or advide -
    alex

Try giving a different solid colour to each of the wing textures, load them onto the plane and see exactly which textures are displaying where... then you'll know which one you need to change, and also if the same textures is used on more than one wing....

A valuable tool for this issue is the PanelFinder.

You can get it here- http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/foru...at-general-12/

That website has a wealth of info regarding repainting.

Hi, and thank you very much for your advice. VERY good idea, indeed. One thing, though, keeps me puzzled: If I do
what you propose and I see that a marking meant for just one wing is displayed on two wings - what can I do in that
case? The question is simply: What have I to do from keeping a marking from getting copied or even flipped twice (as I had). The strange thing is that I DID depart from a given repaint, i. e. a repaint containing single markings on just one upper and just one lower wing. But the simple VARYING this repaint never led me into simply "translating" the given positioning of markings... Thanks anyway! alex

thanks a lot, Bean, I'll check into that. Cheers, alex

    Nothing.

How textures are mapped is decided by the model creator and if they use the same pixels on multiple parts of the plane there is nothing we can do about it.

Hmmm.... was wondering myself today is there anything out there which can let us edit the model itself and reassign textures?
I wasted the whole bloody morning starting to turn the default C172 into an Irish Reims Rocket before I released the wing roundel and number would display reversed on one wing

Would love to be able to hack it so it used a different texture for each wing.... fat bloody chance methinks!

    Correctomundo.

Nothing to be done, unless you can convince Microsoft to release ....never mind.

Alex and I had contact by mail.

Most likely Alex uses the V1 version and he needs the V2 of this plane to use the templates I made.

The V2 version is available at AVSIM
