Do the buttons respond to the Windows test dialog?
Control Panel/Devices and Printers -> Right Click the Cyborg fly 5 icon, Game controller settings, properties, Test tab.

Sometimes plugging controls into a different USB port will also wake them up...Don

Don's advice is good as usual! Have you also tried to do the calibration? It should show the different buttons being pressed. With my setup going to control panel-game controllers brought up the calibration of my Attack 3 joystick.

yes guys, have tried all of the above. recently is struck me that that stick comes in two pieces, and all the buttons on the base work while none of the buttons on the stick do. have tried detatching it, cleaning the contacts and re-seating it, but to no avail. this makes me wonder if the stick itself might be defective. been procrastinating on returning the thing, wouldnt be surprised if amazon wouldnt take it back by now. one other thing i could do is test it out on an older version of windows; - if the same thing happened, that would pretty well clinch it's being defective.
