Thread: The final FSX tuning guide

Default The final FSX tuning guide

For those who don't know this guide yet, it's a different approach from NickN's tuning or the automated tuning method of Bojote.
I tried both but this method makes my FSX really run like a dream.

If you have a SandyBridge or IvyBridge i5 (-K) or i7 (-K) processor and at least a GTX-560(TI) card, try this:

Start from a fresh fsx.cfg and see for the tuning 'bible' by KOSTA here:

Just took a quick glance at it. To an old dude such as I am, it appears complex. But I ain't da brightest bulb on da string.

I tried this a couple weeks ago and my fsx runs very smooth. Locked at 30 fps (per recommendations) I seldom see anything below 29.1 except in big city airports with lotsa wx; then maybe down to the low twenties but still very smooth.

It really wasn't as hard to follow as it first appears and if you read through the entire thread almost any question you may have gets explained in detail.

Very glad it has served you Jesse.

As an addon to Kosta's great guide - you might also take a look at DX10, as it gives an even smoother and better-looking sim experience than DX9 does:

You need to setup FSX and Inspector following similar rules, as Kosta has outlined, but with settings closer to these in the DX10 "How-To" guide, here https://dl.dropbox.com/u/52676345/DX...10%20Notes.doc (.doc) or here https://dl.dropbox.com/u/52676345/DX...10%20Notes.pdf (pdf), and install the ShadersHLSL Patch from here https://dl.dropbox.com/u/52676345/DX...ase_v3.2.2.zip .

What DX10 will do for you, to a good degree, is to take away "guessing" at what to change. The FSX response to almost every setting in DX10 is quite predictable, and if you are prepared to put in a few days of testing you will be rewarded with an "almost new" FSX.

I will second this suggestion. I set up my new computer following Paul's excellent DX10 guide, added SweetFX and tweaked it for best results on my rig. Sim-Savvy scenery has never been so sharp, crisp and smooth! Remember that every computer is a bit different so there isn't a single setup that is best for all - some tweaking is required.

I also want to add to the DX10 recommendation.

I followed Paul J's well thought out recommendations for nVidia Inspector and fsx.cfg setting. My flights over Seattle/KFBI/KSEA in DX10 show about a 25% increase in frame rates over what I experience in DX9 with the same scenery settings.

I did have to turn off LandDetailTextures in the scenery settings (uncheck the box) to get rid of some shimmering. But - I see no difference in image quality while flying over Seattle-Renton-KSEA at 3000'

A big part of the recent DX10 improvement, at least on my system with an old nVidia 8800GTS card, was a result of the last couple driver improvements offered by nVidia. Each time I installed a new driver since 196 I have seen a one or two FPS improvement independent of any other change.
