Thread: Problem with Aliasing on a 27" Flatscreen Monitor

Default Problem with Aliasing on a 27" Flatscreen Monitor

    Hi Folks-
I recently replaced my old 20” Sony CRT Monitor with a ASUS 27” 1920X 1080. The color is very good but I’ve got Aliasing happening again on buildings, runways, taxiways and far away objects like ships, bridges, etc. Aliasing was hardly noticeable on my old Sony because it had a narrower screen. I guess I could get a higher resolution monitor but isn’t that going to require more power to drive all those extra pixels? I’m currently running FS9 on Windows XP with an AMD Athlon 64 processor 4000+ 2.41 GHZ, 1.00 gb of Ram and an ATI ASUS EAH 4870 video card.
I’ve got my frame rates set at 40 fps and most of the sliders set at about 50%. The frame rates take a hit at airports where I have a lot of AI Traffic but nothing that I can’t live with. The main problem is the aliasing; if I can get rid of that I would be pleased. My video card is a 2008, so is probably due for an upgrade.
The suggestion by Hardcub2beat on a previous post; of trying an NVidia XFS GeForce 9800 GT GDDR3 512MB card, is tempting but would I also have to get a different motherboard, etc? Even more tempting is getting a much newer system with an NVidia EVGA GTX550ti GDDR5 1024MB card like he has, but is this going to solve the aliasing problem?
Am I right to assume that he’s running Windows 7 and not XP?
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Best Regards, Ken

Keep your 4870! It is a higher performing card than the 9800 GT. Just a little behind the original GTX 260.
Install the latest driver. 12.6 was released a couple weeks ago. AMD website's driver downloads make it seamless.
http://support.amd.com/US/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx Be careful to select exactly what you have in the dropdown lists.

The Catalyst Control Center/AMD Vision Engine should allow you to tune out the jaggies and shimmers.
Note; On my system(HD 4670) a lot of that was MipMap quality related...Don

Thanks for the info on the latest driver. I've installed it and I'm attempting to tweak the sliders in the Catalyst Control Center 3D section. I moved the Anti-Aliasing slider all the way over to 8x and the Adaptive Anti-Aliasing slider to Quality. That got rid off most of the Aliasing but I still have a lot of shimmering on distant objects. Can you perhaps suggest where I should position the sliders to get best results for each of the 3D entries: Standard Settings ---performance _________________________Quality
    Anti-Aliasing ---level 2x_________________4x______________8x
    Adaptive Anti-Aliasing -----performance _________________________Quality
    Anisotropic Filter ---level 2x_________________4x______________8x____________16x
    Mip maps Detail -----performance _________________________Quality

You'll have to "tinker" to find the sweet spot for your combination. What works for one rig, may be trash on another...Don
