Thread: I can't seem to edit .cfg files and make the changes stick.

  1. Question I can't seem to edit .cfg files and make the changes stick.

I've returned to simming after a long hiatus. I'm running FS9 on my laptop with Win 7 Pro. I've been trying to tweak some of the .cfg files using notepad and wordpad. But when I try to save the modified files into the parent directory, I get the error message, "access denied". I have changed settings (under "properties") to eliminate the "read-only" restriction to all folders and files in the FS9 directory. I had no trouble editing .cfg files on my old desktop running Win XP Pro.

    What am I missing?

    Hello!
Try to save it to somewhere like your desktop and then copy, paste and replace the file you are trying to edit.
    Hope this helps!

You may also have to edit the folder security of your FS installationfolder.

Likely your account has read access allowed but nor write access.
Grant your account write access to the folder and you should be able to save the cfg files.

Or use an administrator account to make the changes.

Do as 1234PLANE says, copy it to desktop, edit it, save it, paste it back to the AppData/FSX folder, click yes when asked to overwrite.

FYI for the future: If you do NOT install FS into the Program Files folder, you will never need to worry about any of this!
    Thanks,

I tried all of the above, in order. I tried moving the file to another directory, editing it, and moving it back. No luck. I next tried my best to change my account to increase my rights as a user, but I didn't have the authority to do so (in XP, I had no trouble. Must be a 7 thing). Then I took Jim's advice and reinstalled FS9 into the root C: directory.....SUCCESS!

Thanks, guys, for all your help!

Instead of using the save command in notepad just close it. It used to be that if you saved it with the save command notepad used the wrong font and changed the file extension to .txt which FS doesn't recognize, it needs to end in .cfg

Notepad will "Save" with the original extension, unless it is a new file, or you use the "Save As" command and rename it...Don
