    Question Repaint will not load

    Hi

I am having some problems with a repaint project I am doing. I copied a texture.Random file out of FSX into a new folder: FSX aircraft repaints. Repainted it and then transfered it back into the aircraft folder. The aircraft folder now has one additional texture folder, I changed nothing else. I went to FSX In free flight went to change my aicraft to the repaint but could not find it. No Icon, no name, Nothing...
    What did I miss?
    Thanks

Did you edit the aircraft.cfg file of the aircraft you copied the texture.random file back into?
If you did edit it and add the new entries, check you have a thumbnail and that the 'texture=' line of the cfg file is reading 'texture=random'. If you don't add that, it's looking for a folder that is non-existent.

If you didn't edit it, take a look at this. I made this guide not so long ago to help fix this problem. Don't worry, it's not difficult to do

    I am a little confused.
I used DDS viewer to edit the DDS files for the aircraft.
I renamed the file but kept the texture. part.
I used fsx acft cfg editor but dont know what to do with it, I loaded the correct path and the editor show me the approximate mesage:
    ->fltsim
    fallback.1
    fallback.2
    fallback.3

    What do I do now?

Okay, never mind I found the problem.
Now that I know what it is, it seems kind of obvious.
    Anyway thanks for the help.

Maybe it would be a good idea to share your knowledge with others ( after asking for help yourself ) , posting that you have found the " solution " doesn't help anybody else who may experience the same " problem " .

    Okay

    Sorry about that.
I opened the .cfg file with .cfg editor instead of notepad. I missed that part in the guide.
So not really a problem, just me being a derp!

I can only speak for myself but as a painter I always start by telling Windows to open the aircraft.cfg's with Notepad by right clicking and going to " Open with... " and choosing Notepad as the standard programme . Having done that I always first make a copy of the original aircraft.cfg - right click choose <COPY> move to an empty part of the screen , right click again and choose <PASTE> - and leave it in the same map . Any major foul ups can then easily be corrected by copying the contents of the original .
The same procedure can be used for the textures as well ( either in FS9 or FSX ) then when I save new textures it is just a questiion of opening them with DXTBmp and saving as BMP or DDS with the added bonus that in FSX both types of textures work . This also helps with the texture.cfg as it is also copied along with the textures and automatically refers to the same fallbacks .
Most of my work is with Carenado's aircraft and they are mostly in BMP format but converting them to DDS is more of a space saver than anything else as I ( personally ) have not noticed any improvements in FPS .

Yeah, I opened the .cfg file with a .cfg editor when I should have opened it with notepad.
After I opened it with notepad and followed the guid by TCX559K everything worked fine.
I use DDS in conjunction with MS paint to edit the files of the plane I am working on.

(I will upload some pictures when I am done)

Again thanks to everyone for the help.

P.S. There are two files for every texture for example:
    Random
    Random spec
Do I have to edit both, because so far I have only edited the non spec files and it seems to work fine.

The spec affects what you see when light is reflected off of the surface.

There is no yes or no answer as to if you have to edit the spec or not, it depends.

Some specs are rather basic, some not.

Slew your plane up in the air, with clear skies, and spin the plane around.

Looking at it from different angles you will see the effect of the spec.

Then you decide whether to edit it or not.

Most all "quality" repaints include a custom spec.

Also, you can use the spec to create some interesting effects.
