Thread: ILS Landing Problem

    Default ILS Landing Problem

I have recently started to work on ILS landings, and have come across a problem. I have set everything up right with Nav1 frequency in my radio stack and have activated the NAV hold and the plane lines up with the runway fine. However once the plane is lined up and I press the APP hold button, the plane does nothing. The ALT hold button does not switch off like it should. What could be the problem? I activate the APP hold while still below the GS.

    I'm using a B737-800 if that makes a difference.

    Thanks for your help.

I don't fly the 737, but typically your Alt. Hold should turn off upon intercepting the glideslope, depicted by your glideslope indicator being centered. If you have activated APP below the glideslope, as you stated, your GS indicator will slowly migrate toward the center hash. Seems like you have a handle on all that.

What is your approach speed and what exact approach are you shooting? Perhaps it's not an ILS, but simply a localizer?

I just tried again, and was successful this time. This is what I did different.

I slowed my approach speed from 200kn to 180kn. I turned off auto throttle as well. One of those must have done the trick. What do you think?

On my other tries, the GS indicator would move towards the center hash but move past it without disengaging the ALT hold.

Hi, I suspect the disarming of the AT but again, I don't really ride that AC. The speed adjustment also seems much closer to where you should be - maybe even slower depending on weight/load and where you're intercepting the GS at during the approach. If it's at the outer marker then you're still likely too fast. I suspect with the 737 you should be around 150 - 160 KIAS.
Glad you got it sorted out .

Flaps 5 and 160-170 knots is about right, depending on weight.

Check out my reply to a similar thread here: http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showth...82#post1617382

    That wll put you right.

BTW - a good check list will also help you out with the right approach speeds and when to deploy flaps etc.
