hey folks,
i'm new to this forum and generally lurk - what's up? i've also seen performance gains from defragmenting my drives and i use diskeeper because it prevents most of the fragments as well. i swapped my drive for ssds awhile back and thought defrag wasn't needed any more.
however, i found out that diskeeper 12 uses TRIM in windows 7 and actually saw performance gains playing flight sims and other performance/graphic intensive games on my ssds. it's pretty dope - anyone else heard of it?

Defrag isn't needed on SSDs, and the TRIM function is not defragging. Programs like Diskeeper include it to try and stay relevant as people slowing move to SSDs. Windows 7 automatically runs the TRIM function itself, and many of the SSD vendors have their own (free) tools if you still want to manually force the TRIM process. Also, some SSDs have their own internal garbage collection processes that perform a similar function. This isn't something I would pay for.
This is correct. Do not ever defragg an SSD. Consumer grade SSD's are MLC technology and have a life expectancy of about 10,000 write operations before that cell dies off. Enterprise class SSD's are always SLC (unless you buy IBM, they use MLC). SLC have about 4 to 5 times the life expectancy of an MLC. SLC drives are also typically much faster than MLC. If you can afford a SLC drive, I'd highly recommend it over MLC technology, but there is a steep price of admission here. The drives I buy for my storage arrays (EMC equipment) run about 8 grand for a 200 GB SSD drive and upwards of 17k for a 400 GB SSD (again, we are talking enterprise class here).

Hi!
That's great that you saw such a big decrease in load times and stuff. I have never found load times to be too bad in FsX, especially compared to Fs9 with photoscenery which can take a long long time! Plus whenever I use the windows defragger in Vista on my Fsx pc it always says it doesn't need to do anything, even after installing a big photoscenery off a DVD.
Anyway if you're looking for FPS I will reccommend one tweak if you haven't seen it:

There's a link on that page to a French flightsim site page where the guy decided to try his Fs9.cfg in Fsx and saw a big FPS increase with no bad effects. You don't need to know French or even have an Fs9.cfg handy as he has put the Fs9.cfg you need all in text you can copy and paste. Of course if you decide to try make backups first. For me my max Fps went from roughly 30 to 70. I still have a hard time in overcast with the 3d clouds but it did help a lot. Only problem is you have to get the sim set up the way you like it again. I can't promise it will work on every or even most PC's but it did work quite a difference for me.
Many thanks.
Pierre
I still stand by my opinion that there is no need to purchase a program to defrag or optimize an SSD. MyDefrag will do a free space consolidation on SSDs if one wants to, and is free to download.Hi loki,

And if one wants to force the TRIM command to run, there are free tools to do so.
