Cool World Golf Championships commerative Fly-In at the Firestone Country Club ... Sunday!

Harvey Firestone began construction ... in Akron, Ohio ... of the Firestone Country Club back in 1929 for his employees at the Firestone Rubber and Tire Company.

Copied and pasted from the Ohio History Central webpage:

"In 1954, the first professional tournament was held at the Firestone Country Club. Known as the Rubber City Open, this tournament lasted until 1960. In that year the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Championship occurred at the club. The PGA has held its championship at the Firestone Country Club in 1960, 1966, and 1975. Beginning in 1961, the American Golf Classic took place at Firestone. This tournament remained at the club until 1976. In 1962, the World of Series of Golf began to hold an event at the Firestone Country Club. By 1976, this tournament had evolved into one of the leading competitions on the PGA tour schedule. This event ended in 1998.

The main tournament currently held at the Firestone Country Club is the World Series of Golf's WSG-NEC Invitational. The NEC Corporation sponsors the tournament. First held in 1999, the International Federation of PGA Tours organizes and sanctions the event. Generally, the tournament field is one-half the size of those in other tournaments. This is an invitation only event with the best golfers in the world invited to participate. Tiger Woods won the first three tournaments in the series."

The Firestone CC will host this year's World Golf Championships ... through this weekend August 1 - August 5.

FSMPA forum will be commemorating this by hosting a golf match on the TW06 platform as well as a fly-in with MSFS.

    DESCRIPTION

The event will be staged in a different era which will be 1935.

TW06 allows for the attire that was dawned by golfers during this time ... using the players and or dress from either the Old Tom Morris era or the Ben Hogan era on your own personal player will be acceptable

Any MSFS period aircraft, in either sim, up to and including the Douglas DC-3 ... it didn't come out until the following year .. but we'll make the exception for those that haven't flown on the Airways yet.

    TIME and DATE

Sunday 5 Aug 2012 .... 1600 ZULU and run until probably 2100 ZULU .... long time? .... yep, read on.

I will be on the FSHost server much earlier as I plane to fly in from Cox-Dayton Int'l (KDAY) and use the Civil Airways and Radio Range stations of the period.

Then after arriving in Akron-Fulton Int'l (KAKR) I will wait for those that have expressed an intent to play and then begin an 18 hole round whose format will be decided at tee time which will be 1815 ZULU.

Participants may pick and choose a 2 hour window or certainly hang out for the whole event.

Roughly 2 hours in the air and just over 2 hours on the golf course depending on format maybe sooner.

Come out to meet me at Dayton, OH ... fly in and go home.

Show up on the FSHost server at about an hour out of Akron, OH at an airport of your choice ... fly-in ... play 9 and go home.

No fly in at all just be on TS3 by 1815 ZULU and play all 18 holes.

    REQUIRED SCENERY

You will find the Firestone CC download at: http://www.coursedownloads.com/cours...n.asp?gameid=8

In order to participate in the flight via the US Civil Airways you will need to download install rr40.zip found at the library here.

There are several zips that will put the Radio Range equipment in other aircraft, but the included DC-3 will work perfectly.

See the included maps and charts for proper flight planning along the Green 4 and Blue 15 Airways utilizing the RR stations at Dayton, Columbus, and Akron.

I will be traveling in a special Ford Trimotor that should be in the library by weeks end or can be made available upon request before hand.

    SERVERS and PASSWORDS

We will be using our FSMPA Flight sim Server found at fsmpa.hopto.org and the TS3 server found at the same address.

There will be no passwords initially ... any subsequent will announced at the time of their install.

    CONCLUSION

Hope to see a hundred, but at least two of us to fly-in Sunday 5 Aug 2012, between 1600 ZULU out of KDAY to KAKR maximum or any interim airport to suit your schedule.

18 Hole Tee Time at Firestone will be 1815 ZULU ... feel free to play only 9 holes if that's all the time you can muster.

    QUESTIONS and COMMENTS

    Sure has David!,

The new Trimotor is on the browser in the Pilots Lounge at TS3.

Grand Rapids is a bit far away from Akron in the Ford, but if all agree we could probably leave out from Lansing and make it in time .... we'll see.

    Have a good week!,

I'm not a golfer, but I'd love to join in on the flying part.

    That sounds good Ed!

Look forward to flying with you ... it would be a good time to pick up on some of the Radio Range.

The Ford's a tad slow for most folks, but will work to everyone's advantage.

Slower flight will let the new method of navigating develop a little slower and be easier to read and take in.

We could leave the Windy around 1000 your time if that's not too early.

Track out across the Lake bump up the sim rate and stop off in Grand Rapids to pick up brotha Red.

Just an idea ... we'll see who all shows up on the thread by the end of this week and decide then.

Grand Rapids would actually be going a ways too far out your way. Kalamazoo/Battle Creek Int'l (KAZO) is much shorter drive for yours truly.

I was actually entertaining thoughts of dusting off my Boeing 247D and flying that direct to Akron, then meeting up with anyone who was coming in from Dayton.

I'm flexible, though. If there's a good-sized contingent wanting to do the Dayton-Akron run, I could conceivably rent some hangar space in Dayton, park the 247 and climb in a Tri-Motor for the ride to the golf course.

And of course, you don't have to ask whether or not I'm in for golfing!

    The plot thickens ....

Did you grab the Ford from the TS server yet?

This sounds like fun...I wish I could participate. The problem is that I have a golf outing scheduled for every weekend in the month of August. This week’s tee time was set up by someone else, however they knew I like to get out no later than 6:30AM, so who knows?

If the gang is still around Sunday, after we finish our round of golf, I just may shoot over to Akron from 8G7 in time to watch the trophy being presented…….or perhaps earlier.

The latest Ford Trimotor, e/w radio range flies great. From 8G7 to Akron is only 60nm….a nice short hop.

    Cool

Well then Fred ... keep 'um in the short grass and have fun! ... we'll catch ya later.

I picked through the fine collection of repaints from Garry J. Smith and will put 3 or 4 on the TS server this morning with the auto-installer for the Trimotor.

Applying repaints to New Trimotor is a bit more complicated than normal .... if you need any help post here.

For the sake of picking up skills navigating the Civil Airways that were in use during 1934 it would be better for me to make the departure for Sundays' Fly-in from Cincinnati, OH.

More Airway transfers and a little busier in the cockpit to make best use of the Trimotors' slower cruise.

Normally KCVG is associated with Cincinnati, but it wasn't around in 1935, so we'll use Lunken Municipal Airport (KLUK).

This is NOT written in stone, so if you have another preference of departure that will work just fine ... I can still monitor and help with the navigation to Akron .... which will be Akron-Fulton Int'l (KAKR) as opposed to Akron-Canton Regional (KCAK).

A happy-go-lucky cruise through the Buckeye via the following route utilizing the US Civil Airways circa 1935.

Will need to leave KLUK by around 1600 ZULU Sunday to allow plenty of time to make our Tee Time at the Firestone CC of 1815 ZULU.

Screenshot of one of the repaints .... look in the distance at the top of the hill to the left and you'll see the towers of station at Cincinnati ... barely.

    Cool

Okay ... for any last minute players or flyers I have uploaded everything that is required for Sunday as per the original post.

In the Pilot's Lounge browser, on the TS3 server, there are all of the required installers, install instructions, and files for:

    The Trimotor

    4 repaints

    The Firestone CC for TW06

If you require any further assistance just post here.
