FSX immediately crashes at startup. A screen comes up on top of the startup screen that says "resume flight, exit flight" and one other thing I can't remember. Then it stops responding

Rename fsx.cfg(fsxBAK.cfg, etc), {C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX} and let the sim build a new one.
That will require you to re-set everything{Options/Settings/Display}, if it works to launch the sim correctly...Don

Does it crash immediately or slowly stop responding? You've got both mentioned. The trick for me is always to open the fsx.cfg file and delete the line that has "Situation" (with the path to your saved flight, i.e. SITUATION=C:\Users\T\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\Dillingham - L-39. The corruption always seems to be within my flight that i've saved as the default.
Deleting just this line saves all your other settings that would normally get tossed when rebuilding a new cfg. Though if this doesn't work, then save your fsx.cfg file and remove it from it's folder and try to start it that way.
