Thread: X-Plane 10 questions

    Default X-Plane 10 questions

Just got X-Plane 10 and noticed that it's nowhere near as user friendly as FSX, so I have a few questions:

    1. Is there a way to use my POV hat to look around the cockpit? I think it's called command view.

    2. Is there a button assignment to cycle through all the views, or does there have to be one button for each view?

    3. Is there a way to start a flight at a gate or ramp with everything turned off?

It seems that aside from graphics, X-Plane is an inferior application when compare with FSX, am I wrong?

Thanks for the help in advance.

    Hello and welcome.

Having to buy an over-clocked high-end CPU, deal with many CTDs and the need to edit a file called "fsx.cfg" is not what I call "user friendly". I prefer the X-Plane user interface and performance.

Yes ! Are you using version 10.05 ? What's your operating system ? With GNU/Linux you may need help:

With other operating systems or version 10.10 (for now a beta), you should be able to set this by assigning the controls and buttons.

You can assign a button for each view but I can't remember if there's a "cycle views". I don't think there's a default "cycle views" but it may be possible with a plug-in.

Yes, just select a ramp instead of a runway and disable running engines:

For me, FSX was a horrible slide show even with low (and bad looking) settings. FS2004 with add-ons looked better than FSX on my PC. Now with X-Plane 9 & 10 and add-ons, it's just awesome and smooth:

Of course, I know you can find great looking sceneries for FSX, but with the lag, is it still a flight simulator or an airfield simulator ?

    Happy flying.

    Hi, Hydra.
    >>1. Is there a way to use my POV hat to look around the cockpit? I think it's called command view.<<

In 2D mode you can use / Assign your Hat to look around.

    >>2. Is there a button assignment to cycle through all the views, or does there have to be one button for each view?<<

You have to assign a button to each, i.e., go from 2D to VC I have button 9 on View:3D cmmd Look, and button 1 to View Frwd with panel, then you can look around with the Hat.

    >>It seems that aside from graphics, X-Plane is an inferior application when compare with FSX, am I wrong?<<

I am afraid you are NOT wrong, it is an inferior product and by the attitude of the developers it will never be better than a 10 year old app. If you are satisfied with flight models that don't come close to reality, a muddy view anything between 10 SM and nothing beyond about 30 SM than it may be for you. On my system I get a much better performance on FSX than XPX with better resolution, well beyond what XPX is capable of. Add to it the only constant, incompatibility between the versions, and you get XPX. TV

The attitude of Laminar Research is far better than Microsoft's attitude with this unfinished unreliable FSX beta 2 (called "SP2") that still needs a 4GHz+ CPU for most add-ons:

Just read this blog, fly X-Plane, and enjoy the difference:

    Hydra,

Please note that this is just beta software for sale and someday it will be out of beta.
    Thanks,

    Jim

Yep. X Plane is inferior to FSX and Flight. I don't know what PMDG, Aerosoft, Carenado, etc... are thinking by expanding and eventually moving to X Plane. They should move to Flight. It's MUCH easier to make an aircraft without a cockpit and fly around Alaska or Hawaii.

    Edit:
Yup. X Plane definitely doesn't look as good as FSX! (Small LOL) Even with HDR on...Something FSX doesn't even have.

First...............I'll take exception to MdMax's comments..............because I found FSX very favorable over FS2004 in most cases, and it ran much better than a slide show on my machine. In fact, I purposely upgraded for FSX & X-Plane 8, because my prior CPU was simply not capable.

As to "Callmecapt", we must keep in mind, that he is a 3rd party developer for X-Plane. His income depends on it. The DC-3 shown, is one of his products. I'll say it all the time................X-Plane must stand on it's own. Don't be using the worse excuses you can find for FSX to make points. If I were to list all the worse points of X-Plane, it would look like a pending disaster to someone who's just got into flight simming.

IMO, X-Plane can be much more than just graphics. Do the flight models beat FSX hands down? Of course NOT! Only X-Plane developers will tell you that they do. X-Plane has a different method, than FSX to compute flight models........but it's not perfect by anymeans. Only X-Plane developers will tell you that it is, or very close to. While an X-Plane (real pilot) user might incinuate that X-Plane is far ahead in the flight dynamics department, I can tell you (as a real pilot) that that's far from reality. Otherwise, I'd be jumping all over X-Plane and never look back. But that's not the case. FSX is far from dead, and outstanding aircraft with exceptional flight characteristics are still being developed and sold.

As to myself, I'll use FS2004, FSX, and X-Plane. I have no problem with that. Just remember, XP needs to stand on it's own. I get very irritated with the "hype" that uses FSX as a whipping post. Especially when it's a bunch of bull!

No flight model is perfect, even in X-Plane or Aerofly FS, but in FS2004, FSX or Flight you don't even have the basics, like propwash.

    Or like adverse yaw:

Of course, here on "FlightSim.com", you'll find a lot more FSX add-on sellers than X-Plane users.

I'm not really sure what you mean when you say X Plane has to stand on its own. As far as I can see, it does. This thread started going downhill when "flytv" started pointing out myths about x plane that he thinks are truths. I simply corrected him. And the focus wasn't meant to be solely on my DC-3, but the new scenery just released. KILM airport. I wanted to show an airport AND an aircraft cockpit. Seeing as I don't have anyone to answer to or ask permission from, I chose my aircraft.
Do the flight models in X Plane beat FSX flight models hands down? Absolutely. As a real pilot, I'm shocked you disagree, Larry. For I'm a real pilot as well. And I am rated in several GA aircraft. So you tell me...why would your opinion be more valid than mine?
I can safely say that X Planes flight models can get very close to perfect within the normal operating flight envelope. Outside of it...well, until I have a catastrophic failure of some kind in any of the aircraft I fly, I can't say for sure.
FSX is not far from dead. It's very close. And fading fast. Developers are looking for alternatives. P3D is one of them. OrbX are moving there. Others are moving to X Plane. I think it's time to stop living in denial and accept the inevitable. FSX is 6 year old software. These days, software is considered obsolete after a year. I admire your loyalty to a product, Larry. But I don't admire it if it is at the expense of another platform. Especially when you try to make examples out of "other developers". Something you seem to do a lot of.
