Shift+M actually just toggles the master battery - not a proper C&D because your fuel valves will still be on, avionics master will still be on, etc.

To make a proper C&D startup load the default Skyhawk:

press "L" as many times as it takes to turn all lights off
    turn off pitot heat (Shift+H)
press Ctrl+Shift+F1 to cut the mixture (closes fuel valves on jets)
    turn off the avionics master
turn off the alternator and master battery (Shift+M)

Now load the aircraft of your choice, move to the airport/parking of your choice, save the flight and tick "make this my default flight".

Note that any radio frequencies, autopilot settings, view/zoom settings, ATC window position & size, weather, GPS flight plan, etc will be saved in the default flight and inherited into any flight you create from the "free flight" menu. You can later load the flight, customize some things, and re-save it if you find you'd like to change anything later on. You can also open the saved .FLT file in Notepad and change any number of things with simple text edits if desired.

    Jim
