Thread: Was I just misunderstanding the ATC?

  1. Default Was I just misunderstanding the ATC?

Every now and then, the ATC will tell me say: QRH(or QNH?) 1003, then a few minutes later say something something 1028, then back to 1003, and it yells at me when I change it to 1028, so my question is what am I not understanding? Is the ATC perhaps not even talking to me?

ATC usually precedes any call with your call sign or flight number, plus the text in the ATC box will be a different color for any calls made to you so be aware of that when listening to ATC. I have never had ATC reprimand me for going to the wrong Freq. They get a bit miffed when I can't descend from 20,000' to 5,000' in less than 30 seconds, lol. . .but I've never had ATC say anything about being on the wrong frequency. As a rule, FSX/FS9 ATC is poorly constructed and can have you flying all over the countryside for an ILS approach with no other traffic within 100 miles. Just not very accurate sometimes.

QNH is the setting for the pressure altimeter. In standard conditions, its 1013. But it changes with pressure, so in other conditions it may be 1020, or 980... It depends on atmospheric pressure. ATC gives you different QNH, because the plane travels trough different pressure conditions. That is necesary, because otherwise, the altimeter would give you incorrect readings. Set your altimeter manually or by pressing B.

Google search to the rescue! I was puzzled at first but now I understand QNH is pressure reading in Millibars or metric. I normally close the ATC box once I understand the message so I can listen to ATC traffic to other aircraft and not be concerned until the box reopens with a message to me.

Thanks for the replies, it could simply be telling me my flight number (using RC4) I do occasionally have a hard time understanding, it at times.

Could you perhaps be on an IFR flight and changing the TRANSPONDER setting accidentally, thinking you are changing the barometric pressure? Changing your transponder setting WILL get you a message from ATC telling you to change it back.
