Hmmm.......I've been on Windows 7 64 for awhile now. Yes, in the beginning it was a pain in the ass, what with all their admin controls and UAC, but once I got thru that, 7's not so bad.

Also, thanks to this site, I learned early on to install FSX into a seperate folder other than "programsx86". No issues yet....

My FSX machines remains on XP to this day. I built a 3.3ghz dual core with a sub $2K budget 5 years ago. That included double 22" monitors. It has produced 50-60fps with FSX on just 2GB of ram ever since. I have used a single start of FSX for 2-3 days at a time with no CTDs or memory problems, and have never had an out of memory error. Even while running modeling tools, visual studio, photoshop, or video capturing software on the side. Many of my online flying friends had Vista (or W7 later on) at around the same time, and much higher end machines, and to this day have still not matched the performance or reliability of the cheap system I put together. Of course I didn't skimp on Ram (quality, not quantity), GPU, or motherboard. Which is where many make their mistakes, regardless of budget or operating system.

btw, use W7 at work and like it just fine. But I'm not about to go messing with my FS machine for no reason.

I would also bear in mind that Microsoft may discontinue support for XP in the near future.I would try the hardware support forums here and on the "other" site.

Thank you Garry. I want to thank you all for sharing some hints for Win7/FSX CTD. I do realize that I did not include info of my system to aid in your assistance in fixing my system. This is because my questions were aimed at what kind of performance loss I was looking at going back to XP and not how to fix my Win7/FSX CTD issues. If I did want to try again to fix my system I would have posted the info as per mallcott's post. I do appreciate you all trying to help me though. So I will now post the specs. One last note. I most sincerely appologize if I came off as whining. I only wanted to ask a few questions.

Looking at the CFG I realize that the AffinityMask was set to 5. I changed that to 14 and now getting higher frame rates. I will mention now as I know you want to chime in about it but yes I realize FSX is installed on the default directory and not outside of the x86. I will place it in it's own directory after the time comes that I have to do a complete re install. Also I did note that there were remnets of NVidia 260 in the CFG. I removed them and replaced them with NVidia 8800 as you see in the CFG here. I just started a cross country on the sim computer and lets see what happens.

I have FS2004 but don't have many addons for it and realy want to use FSX as I have lots of addons and hardware made to work for FSX. I ran for 2 hours tonight when I had a CTD. It was durring a menu click which makes some sense as I recently removed UIAutomationcore.DLL from the FSX folder and elseware as per some advice over on AVSim. So I re installed UIAutomationcore.DLL and have not had any problems since. Funny thing about that AffinityMask=14. If I run with the framerates unlimmited I am getting about 60FPS! I do limmit though to 30 FPS but what an increase. This is over some lame UTX area but I am sure it will be impressive in the cities, or even some built up ORBX areas.

A lot of card crashes are driver related. My sons friend just purchased a $4500 dollar machine with a GTX680 which kept crashing, the builder said he had a bad card so he got another, same issue, finally came to me, installed the latest beta, they played games fine, but on desktop kept getting crashes, so went back the next beta and its as stable as a roc, yet the other card " is now in my machine" hasnt had a single crash. My 560ti i had to run about 5 versions earlier as it kept crashing on latest release, just put it in my sons machine he hasnt has a single issue. Seems to be a hardware, driver related thingy, but at least i now have a card that my processor will never max out.
