Thread: 3ds Max and making a wing box for my Challenger jet...(Making me angry)

  1. Default 3ds Max and making a wing box for my Challenger jet...(Making me angry)

Okay so I'm pretty familliar with 3ds max and its functions...But I'm having a problems attaching and unifying the wing to the fusealage via a wing box. I used a Boolean on the wing to connect it to the box (Bridged the edges, welded the vertices.) But when I go to attach the wing box to the rest of the fuselage with the Boolean command, it won't outline the wing box on the outside of the fuselage like it did with the wing. It's driving me crazy!!! I spent two days of just trial and error with this crap!

2 whole days? I've spent weeks trying to get something right. Patience will make or break you as a modeler.

On the model question there are some strategies you can try that might help. Prior to the operation remove smoothing groups from the parts you are combining, and they need to be similar in mesh complexity. Make sure you have no co-located vertices. Also, after your first boolean did you convert the new part to an editable mesh/poly prior to the second operation?

Personally I almost never use that function. I'd make a spline in the shape needed to be cut into the fuselage and do a shape merge to cut the hole.

The most active source of modeling information can be found here: http://www.fsdeveloper.com/

Yeah, I'm an impatient person when it comes to modeling...not the best combo. I did convert it to editable poly after the first boolean. I saved my original file and opened it back up, saved it as another name, took out the wing box and started molding another one out of a a box extended from the fuselage...I'll let you know if it works. Thanks for the tip. I might actually make a new wing too because the spline I made it out of has really rough edges and it's bent up.

The shape merge worked! Thanks N2056

    YAY!

Glad I was able to help you out.

Yes...and it's coming along quite nicely too! It's the coolest LOOKING Challenger I have ever seen for FSX or any other sim. It's going to have a full interior and HD virtual cockpit.
